Hello Dawn!

Have you had a good day? How's your daughter doing on the clari now? smile.gif

She's loving it and practise is the first thing on her mind but I have to say that it's not got done tonight .... Partly my fault as I needed to pop out after tea and distraction from another front .... biggrin.gif

But it's on the agenda for first thing tomorrow.... before mine!!

Good evening, clavi biggrin.gif

Good evening! I'm still tuned in to the Monteverdi from the Proms.

A few years ago we had a Second in Music Dept who was a horn player and chose one of Gabrieli's Canzonas for Brass & Organ which we played at our Carol Concert (me at the organ - I can't play a brass instrument for toffee!). It sounded great, the interplay between brass and organ in a good acoustic.

Just found the score: Canzon noni toni a 8 from Gabrieli's Sacrae Symphoniae, 1597. Great stuff! smile.gif

No doubt back then, you'd have been on the sackbutts! biggrin.gif

EDIT: Surely it's a Guinea-pig (not barry's picture) the school (teacher's) pet! smile.gif

My son's really taken with it. Has learn't lots about how to take care of it and is sooooooo chuffed to be the FIRST one to look after it.... smile.gif

just spotted I'd missed this:

ditto!!!

I am just painfully aware of my own current inadequacies on clarinet but I'm determined to keep moving forward. Our band is likely to be getting some more clari players. As well as some new 3rds there are some grade 8s coming in and one's an ex member. I'm very protective of my place and as I am desperately clawing myself up I worry that because I don't have grade 8 on paper I may be overlooked and these new players may be slotted into firsts role..... I know that if they are better than me then they should get that role but also that sitting on 2nd week in, week out, never missing a week or a concert in the last 18 months or more and filling in on higher parts where necessary should also count for something too.

Of course i may be bothering about nothing as this might not happen ..... unsure.gif

What you did makes sense because timing wise a lot of the first parts are actually easier. Though some of it is more challenging technically, it's easier when you can follow the tune. As someone whose real weakness is timing, I absolutely agree with this! I remember being very relieved when I joined the first clarinets in junior orchestra (many years ago!) for precisely this reason!

I start band next Saturday and am hoping that I will be sitting with some very confident players, so that I can ease myself into things very gently! unsure.gif

yeah me too. smile.gif

Thanks for your comments Barry. We area band with perhaps an above the usual number of very good players. 3 regulars and 1 or 2 ex-members/players of other instruments that have stood in from time to time are definitely better than I am but I know I'm the equal (Now though not initially) of one of the current firsts, who's been going slightly longer than me. We also have another player (a newer one) who I would say is my equal on 2nd (She's passed G8 and done a music degree but not played seriously for a while) and another lady on 2nd who's great (usually) on timing but perhaps not always quite there technically. Then we are getting 2/3 more G 8s and perhaps 3 new thirds (if they all come). So you can see it's going to be difficult to organise ..... I've just got highly competitive lately blush.gif

I've just got highly competitive lately blush.gif

Nothing wrong with that : you're a good musician, loyal to the band, and were it me, I'd reward that. smile.gif

Cheers Barry. With that endorsement I'll "fight" (musically, of course) to go as far as I can in the band - I'd be happy with a permanent 1st role actually for now.

My teacher (and lead clarinet) did say something about "conditioning" the conductor. I think he showed her my recital DVD blush.gif unsure.gif I know it went somewhere (in fact round a lot of people blush.gif blush.gif ) he wouldn't quite tell me who but didn't deny it when I hazarded a guess... laugh.gif

You still working on that Rossini?
barry-clari
Yes, I am Dawn. smile.gif It's close-ish to performance level now, but probably won't get an airing just yet. Am tentatively thinking of doing a recital with rachi in Manchester next year, but probably won't play the Rossini there...
