I just watched that program on the survivors of WWI. Moving and upsetting

And the main opening and exit tune was the theme from Schindler's List... nearly every piece of music was a leitmotif from that piece.

It was rubbish.
I had harmony seminar this morning which just bored me because I was asleep..then I had to sit in the same place for 3 HOURS bored stiff...harmony lecture, then early music lecture, then some stupid lecture on how to plagarise something - so we know how not to do it..
I'm getting very good at hangman now though..we played it through the early music lecture..
Then I had 30mins before jazz band so I just sat in the common room and chilled..then I was supposed to go to choir but I had no energy so I came home.

Ooh, that sounds like a bad timetable if you have 3 hours of back-to-back lectures. How many hours a week do you have to go to?
saxlover
Nov 8 2005, 10:34 PM
I usually only have 2 hours of lectures back to back..this plagarism one was a one off...but it was put on at an awful time.
I have 5 lectures a week..but every other week I have a seminar..
Gosh..that is nothing compared to other degrees. Maybe I just can't cope with doing a degree....

It's swings and roundabouts - you only have 5 hours a week of formal academic commitments but are set lots of essays and self-study work to do outside that time.
In my first year I had 23 hours a week of formal academic commitments. Those 23 hours included 10 hours of tutorials, in which we were set pieces of work to do rather than being set essays and so on - as such, outside of those 23 hours we were set very little else to work on.
Now, I have 0 hours of lectures a week; however, over the three years of my PhD (now in the third), I am expected to write 70,000 words and self-study everything I need to do in order to do so.
So don't worry

Of course you can cope with doing a degree. You just need time to adjust and settle in. The first term is always awful, but then you'll get used to it. I remember when I started uni being really annoyed that we didn't get a week off for hallowe'en - even though I'd only been there four weeks!

My PhD is on Artificial Intelligence, so I have to write about the idea I've had for improving the efficiency and capabilities of a category of problem-solving computer programs.
The idea isn't too important - as long as it's relatively new, although that can mean it takes two pre-existing ideas and uses them together. What is important is the background chapter (demonstrating that one is aware of all the work in relavent areas) and the evaluation (demonstrating that one can thoroughly evauate an idea).
From a personal perspective, the important thing is being called Dr. at the end of it
