The "Uncle Deborah" bit goes back to when Nephew was about 2. He was just getting to grips with the names of people he didn't see every day, so when I asked him if he knew what my name was, he looked up at me adoringly and proudly said "Uncle Deborah". OK, one minor error, but I couldn't do much for laughing.
Looks like katyjay needs cheering up too <hands katyjay a large cup of industrial-strength peppermint tea>

Thanks Deborah - just what I needed.
I too used to be an "Uncle". Unfortunately my niece couldn't be persuaded that female "Uncle"s were actually "Aunty"s. For about eighteen months I was Uncle Katyjay.....
Actually, on reflection, better that way round than my husband becoming Aunty MisterJay

Jan 23 2006, 09:14 AM
When I got married second time, I "inherited" a whole set of nephews.. a new relationship for me not having had any previously. Bit strange to be addressed as "Uncle bouffy" in thick, whiny scouse accents! lol
Deborah
Jan 23 2006, 09:14 AM
I made the mistake of letting some of my colleagues know about this, who decided to call me Uncle Deborah long after Nephew had worked out that I was actually Aunty Deborah. At least Nephew was the only one of the tribe of nephews and nieces to make that mistake, otherwise I'd probably be in therapy by now!

One thing I kept telling myself before exams was that the exam is designed to show what you
do know, not to point out what you don't.
Chances are, you'll know a fair bit of it, so focus on the stuff you can do and forget the stuff you can't.
And make sure you get enough rest.
Cheers

I "accidentally" entered myself to sit Grade 6 theory on 1st March, and in the cold light of day am wondering if I've just chucked £27.50 down the drain.
katyjay, the exam kit will probably include six pencils, three rubbbers, two pencil sharpeners, at least one pivot chord, and possibly a hip flask.

What's a pivot chord? How did I manage A level music, ARCO paperwork and ALCM paperwork, all with Bach harmonisation without knowing this?!
Deborah
Jan 23 2006, 09:50 AM
I like to think I'll be fine; after all, I have a GCSE, A level and degree in music, so a little SATB harmonisation shouldn't present me with any difficulty - it certainly didn't on the practice paper I did last week. Not sure I could handle the humiliation of failing though (especially given the aforementioned qualifications!), and I'm extremely out of practice at exams, not having sat any at all since 1994. Most of it should be just revision, dredging up obscure facts about passing second inversion chords from a dusty corner in the back of my memory.
mrbouffant, I'm glad you asked what a pivot chord was. Anyone care to share?
katyjay
Jan 23 2006, 09:50 AM
I have absolutely no idea, Mr B. I vaguely recalled the term from the query that was going on the General Music thread.......
Maybe by this summer I'll have a clue.....

Morning all!
(got no idea what a pivot chord is before you ask - I just play the stuff!)
mrbouffant
Jan 23 2006, 09:59 AM
My approach to harmonisation is instinctive, coupled with a loose knowledge of the basic laws.. I'm no genius, but it's certainly functional. I shall play through all of Bach's chorale harmonisations before the exam just to make sure
YetAnotherPianist
Jan 23 2006, 10:01 AM
A pivot chord is used when performing a smooth modulation: it's common to the home key and the destination key.
E.g. going from C Major to G Major
vi in C Major / ii in G Major - Pivot Chord
V - G Major
I - Perfect cadence, so G Major tonality established.
The vi/ii chord is the pivot chord in this case, and the perfect cadence establishes the modulation into the new key

Morning Carol, the kettle's just boiled if you'd like a drink.
mrbouffant, don't play through the Bach chorales! I've sung enough of them to realise that they're all so good because Bach broke the rules instead of sticking rigidly to them. Unless of course you're aiming for musical rather than theorectical perfection.

*cough* crossing voices *cough*
*cough* leading note falling at cadences *cough*
*cough* doubling major thirds *cough*
But, of course, he was Bach

. If I did it, in a theory exam, it would no doubt be both penalised and unpleasant to listen to

I learnt how to modulate last week

at this level, i think all you need to do is
(a) avoid parallel 5ths and 8ths
(

don't double the third
© throw in some suspensions
(d) throw in some contrary movement, esp between Sop and Bass
(e) throw in a passing note or two
(f) finish all your cadences iib7 - V - I

You don't have to be able to
use iib7, just recognise it in questions 4 and 5 if they say 'name this chord'. Incidentally, it may help if they ask what this chord is and what's the key in a given bar - if it's a 7th chord, it can only be V7 or ii7, which narrows it down nicely

Go the whole hog: IIb7 - Ic - V7 - I (try it with the end of the National Anthem if you don't believe me).

Don't worry, all the 'clever' stuff is left off grade 6: no supertonic 7ths, no diminished 7ths, no Neopolitan 6ths.
Any problems and we do have a support group set up
