It's good stuff, although perhaps not one for elderly parents or small children (which nevertheless doesn't stop some people taking their young offspring to Wozzeck). My original comment was that although certain episodes of my life might be taken straight from the operatic stage, Lulu isn't included in the list of operas from which certain scenes are taken. I realise that this must disappoint

Mmm, thinking back, there are some episodes of my life that are straight from the operatic stage. No, not from Lulu or Le Grand Macabre, before anyone asks!
this is where kmt63 admits he has never really heard or seen an opera ......
huungs head in shame and returns to his blues ..... sniff
Don't worry KMT, it's not compulsory. The first time I went to one was when I was studying part of it for my ATCL. The next time was something I was studying for summer school.
I'd sooner sing the blues too, but I haven't yet got much experience of that either......

I should be practising my nice new viola really but it gave me a real crick in the neck yesterday, I might be holding it wrong maybe. . .
Do you play anything other than piano?
carol*piano
Jan 31 2006, 12:18 PM
Used to play clarinet, sax and double bass but now I just play piano - there are enough things to do just with one instrument to keep me busy!
What made you choose viola?
Boo Radley
Jan 31 2006, 12:23 PM
Erm, don't really know, I just didn't fancy woodwind or brass much and I did want to learn strings, violin was a bit screechy and too popular for my liking and cello was too big so I chose the middle of the road string instrument. I got my viola thursday week before last, it's really nice too, apparently it's a big model but I can reach everything ok so I'm very glad I took it up.
Wow double bass, did you ever use that in any orchestras?

QUOTE(Deborah @ Jan 31 2006, 11:18 AM)

Oh kmt63, you must, you absolutely must go to an opera! Mozart's an excellent place to start, or perhaps try some Puccini - you'll probably know some of the tunes, even if the plot seems a bit far-fetched.
Carol, I could go off you!
I know I keep meaning to go ... the language barrier sometime puts me off although I know the music speaks for itself. I love operetters(SP) has some people call them i.e. Gilbert Sullivan etc.
I make it one of my new years resolutions to go and see an opera this year so I probably will I am normally good like that. I may even take my eldest LOL.

Only a bit at school - mostly used it for playing pizz. bass for local shows and stuff like that. I wasn't very good!

Aaah, just what I need, peppermint tea. Thanks Deborah.
Blood pressure gradually coming down again. We had a talk on expectations - punctuality, practice and preparation (she'd forgotten one of her pieces!) and I reminded her of our letter of agreement when she started with me (I don't call it a contract, but that's what it is). She's gone away to have a good think.

Shame you gave them all up, do you ever whip 'em out every now and then and give them a try?
Deborah
Jan 31 2006, 12:29 PM
kmt63 - you must! Feel free to ask if you have any questions.
Carol - you used to play clarinet? Looks like you've just moved up a few places on my Christmas card list!
Boo - glad you're enjoying the viola, but when the time comes, hands off my Brahms sonatas!
katyjay - deep breaths! It'll go either one way or the other now, hopefully it's the kick-in-the-pants she needed, rather than the final straw to make her give up.

Talking about instruments I took my son to his recorder lesson yeterday and he has been nagging me to let him start violin lessons.
Fortunatly the violin is his teachers first and best instrument so I asked her if she could let him have a go and see if he would cope.
She tested his aural awarnes and I was amazed at how good he was on the low notes but equally so by the fact that he could match high notes.
He then did some plucking and bow exercise to see how he would take to it. He struggled with reaching etc so I suggest we leave it for a little while (until he was aurally aware at least and preferable a little bigger). Fortunatly his teacher said a delay of a few months would be a good idea.
My son still hasnt talked to me !!!!
I guess he really wants to do it ... LOL

No problem, Deborah. It's not that I don't approve of peanut butter, I quite like it. But I find it mucks my throat up worse than anything else does - so it's definitely an occasional thing and not on a singing day.
