Nooo! Not only is Trebor trying to explain it here, Husband is next to me trying to explain it as well. Something about shoes having mass after the symmetry is broken, which is probably when one of them has been lost, at which point I wouldn't want to buy them.

Wonder if there's any more of YAP's virtual Lindt 85 around?

There's a wikipedia article on Higgs Bosons which is reasonably good at explaining what they are.

Well, Baby Bouffant will apparently be called Higgs Boson Bouffant, which has led to a discussion on particle physics, during which I betrayed the fact that my highest science qualification is a B at GCSE (awarded a loooong time ago); people have discussed capital letters in usernames; tea has been drunk; otherwise, no nothing much.

For trills involving a middle-line B natural, or the C natural a semitone above it, which would otherwise involve crossing the break to trill. The sound is quite thin, so they're for emergency use only.

At the risk of bordering musical discussion in the cafe...
How well equipped with trill keys is the clarinet compared to the oboe? My oboe playing friend was demonstrating his to me the other day, and how he can do fast trills by alternating between trill keys.

Clarinet has 6
Fork B
RH E flat
RH F#
RH B
RH C
LH E flat
Oboes are probably more equipped

YAP, shame on you!
The vast majority of notes on the clarinet have at least one, often two, alternative fingerings. Some are used almost exclusively for trills (e.g. to avoid having to put down and lift up all fingers in quick succession). There are other occasions where the actual music dictates which fingering is used, i.e. if you don't use certain fingerings, you soon come unstuck. There's also personal preference.
If you'd like to find out more, why not take advantage of my exclusive rates for ABRSM Forum members? Remember, I'm only a six hour train journey away!
Can't help with the oboe query though.

Mel managed to disable Andy from hurting Sam or Nicole any more, he then got away and ran off, Mel chased him and he ran into a post while impaled right through him where Mel saw him die. And the resort Louise and Mandy stayed at, the owner turned out to be Louise's husband!
What shocking images!

cheers Sarah, that's very useful so thanks! The 6 subjects I eventually put down on my form were: French, Spanish, Maths, Music, Religious Studies and History and I'll end up taking four or five of them. I would really like to take Law or Further Maths but don't have enough options. I didn't really like the look of the English Lang course at college and GCSE English lit is putting me off any further English lit, although I love to read and think about books, even the classics!

Rainbow: glad to have helped!
English Lit at A Level was a completely different ballgame, but I understand your feelings: I didn't take it at uni because I was afraid 3 solid years of pulling books apart would endanger my joy in reading them in the first place! History will give you a lot of essay practice anyway, as will RS I would imagine. Keep reading books (especially any you can find in translation from French or Spanish - or even originals if you're feeling brave) and thinking about deeper themes etc, then you will keep in practice. English Lit at GCSE was pretty dire as I remember. I recently sent Nicki an essay I did for GCSE which I was almost embarrassed to send it was so completely lame, and I definitely got at least an A for it

whereas my A Level essays seem OK even now. It does depend what you plan to do at uni and where you plan to go: it's possible for example in Durham to take 3 languages and never touch history or lit, I imagine most places are the same; if you take 2 then I suspect it's likely you can avoid most of it, if you end up paring it down to one (as I did) then you won't escape it!
In the end, though, it's important to be studying subjects you will enjoy, more than anything.

Wow, thanks! Ok, just a quickie before I go to bed:
The thing with me and English lit/lang is that I can write some really good essays (eg high A*) and some really crappy ones (where I've struggled to get Bs). My good scores do tend to cancel out the low ones but still...... My English class is also quite disruptive so it can be hard to learn anything. I also hate formulaic essay plans!
I'd love to read French/Spanish books, have you got any recommendations? I know that I want to study French and Spanish at a good university, maybe do Mandarin Chinese or Italian as well.
Thanks very much Sarah, night night (my mum has just come in and told me to go to bed!)

I'll have a think about recommendations, the first ones to spring to mind for Spanish, though whether they would be considered uni material I don't know, are those by Gabriel Garcia Marquez: One Hundred Years of Solitude, Love in a Time of Cholera, News of a Kidnapping. They would certainly keep your grey matter ticking over! I'm a big fan of his, think he's from South America, Columbia maybe?
I'm off too, but PM or email me soon and remind me to recommend you some, as I know what I am like - so prod me, OK??

Yes, English Lit at GCSE is soooo much different than that at A Level.
I would advise you to take 4 A Levels, I take 5 including General Studies, but who counts that, eh - I have no work that I have to do for it? The temptation after doing 10 subjects at GCSE is that 4 doesn't sound very many but the work is much harder and there is much more of it. I sometimes can't cope with 4, and especially Music and History, require so much effort and work.
