Actually, I suffered horribly in my first year at my second school because of my accent.
I had moved from a village primary in Oxfordshire to the junior department of an independent school in Oxford - and most of the other pupils there had academic parents and had been to prep. school. So my "shoire" accent was very obvious and very conspicuous. And then as I learned to talk like them to fit in, everyone I used to play with in the village said I talked like "cut-glass" and claimed I was too snobby to play with any more

Sounds too too familiar. I moved from a very respectable girls' secondar school in Surrey to a not-so-good mixed school in Hampshire at the end of the third year (apologies to the youngsters, I don't know what this would be in new money), so went from standing out because my dad wasn't something big in the City to standing out because I didn't use double negatives and insisted on pronouncing the letter h when required.
At least being Deborah-NoMates left plenty of time for music and homework (which just perpetuated Deborah-NoMates).

Ashmoors, it's currently just after midday here in the UK. If you click on someone's username on the left-hand side, this brings up the user's profile, and this includes the user's local time.

I'm a bit of a chameleon as far as accents are concerned. Mine gets posher or less posh depending on who I am talking to, which is fun if there are a lot of people together. I'm not quite as chameleon-like as my Mum used to be, though. She would come out after a day spent with her brother and his Scottish wife with a passable Lanarkshire accent.

Just what I was gonna say....

Happens to me too - I have a welsh music teacher, and when I'm talking to him sometimes out comes the odd word with a welsh slant on it. I don't mean to !!!

My brother and sister both have very definate Manchester accents.
My husband is pretty broad Oldham so our children don't have particularly strong local accents.

If you think the Edinburgh accents bad you should try speaking to someone from Glasgow or Aberdeen (which is even worst). When I'm at home I'm more Scottish sounding than I am in Edinburgh!

Hubby and I had a hilarious holiday one year touring Normandy in the company of a friend from Houston and a friend from Glasgow.
We all understood each other perfectly well in French. It was in English that we two southerners had to do the translating.....

Thanks

Yeah it's also like that in my school though it's not private.. as half the people are chav and the other half are goth/emo and it always seems the chavs talk about the goths they overhear and it starts this massive row in the school which always ends in an immatue "i hate everyone" thing from both sides

and I'm the little innocent one in the middle of it all who has heard so many people mouth off about other people it kills me
