Hello Rainbow, yes I am here though I am finishing off my english coursework
How are you?
Rainbow
Mar 6 2006, 11:46 PM
Not too bad thanks, although rather stressed about my music exam! This might sound like a weird question but do you ever get painful callouses on your fingertips from playing cello? I've got them on my fingertips from playing viola and it's too painful to do vibrato - which I need to do in my exam!
Chaos_91
Mar 6 2006, 11:51 PM
I got them when playing on the A string for a very long time (about for around an hour continuously), The D string would probably also start to make them hurt a lot after a while, there was a method which made my fingers feel much better, I dipped them into something (I forget what it was though) and after a while it didnt hurt as much.
My friend told me there now that if you dip them in soapy hot water for 10 minutes and then rub them with a pumice stone this can really help them.
When is your exam?
Rainbow
Mar 6 2006, 11:54 PM
Thursday! It's just that they are quite painful and I have other forthcoming musical events as well so I'd like to get them sorted!
Chaos_91
Mar 6 2006, 11:57 PM
Hmm... Try dipping them in hot soapy water, as calluses are thick layers of dead skin this will soften them, and then get something rough eg. pumice stone or if you don't have it, try something equally as rough and then scrub the dead skin off, after that let your hands relax for a while and don't put too much pressure on them and they should be fine, I don't knwo how long they will take to heal but hopefully not too long
Also, wear a pair of gloves so the pressure on your finger tips isn't as great, though when playign the viola I am pretty sure it would be a bit strange playing it with gloves

So anytime you aren't practising then wear a pair as it will make the healing time faster

Morning Deborah!
Can't stay long, pupils to see! Really could do with a tea before I go though.....

OK, one tea coming up <serves barry-clari a tea>. How are the preparations for Leicester coming on?

Getting there Deborah! Still got to choose a duet from the Voxman book (doing a duet with Andy piano flute). Have picked 'Fantasy' (Carl Nielsen) for the solo (not too taxing!)
Must make a move, have a good day everyone!

Morning all... thanks for the good wishes Deborah.. my use of "ephemeral parameters" is fully representative of the rest of the bilge I wrote..
Deborah
Mar 7 2006, 09:05 AM
Ah, but did you slip "quintessential" in anywhere?
mrbouffant
Mar 7 2006, 09:08 AM
No, although there might have been a "quasi-paradigmal cross-fertilisation"
Deborah
Mar 7 2006, 09:11 AM
You might just have redeemed yourself with "quasi-paradigmal cross-fertilisation" and "ephemeral parameters", but no "quintessential"? Oh dear.
And I'm sure you've passed - remember all those "I've soooooo failed my LLCM" posts of yours earlier in the year? You were getting nearly as bad as saxlover.

Is this the nicki_flute that got 9 A* and an A at GCSE? I have every confidence she has nothing to worry about. She's a lovely lady and extremely intelligent, who I'm sure is heading for straight As at AS and A level, before a starred first from Oxbridge (no pressure Nicki - if you want to give it all up and grow oranges in Florida a la Delius, do it!)
I'm also sure she'll be a lovely wife for Oddball when they're both grown up.

Morning katyjay. Elevenses sound good.
Have you recovered from yesterday's Grade 1?
katyjay
Mar 7 2006, 11:05 AM
Yes, but......
I noticed at choir last night that I was having trouble turning my head to the left. It developed overnight into a full blown pain in the neck. I got an emergency appointment at the medic's this morning, where I was told it's a pinched nerve.
So now I'm on industrial strength painkillers and muscle relaxants, and am forbidden both alcohol and driving until the course of each is finished (a fortnight).
Trouble is, the muscle relaxants are mood-affecting, and I can't stop crying. I was warned that could happen, but it's a bit scary anyway.

Hi deborah. How have you been recently?
Deborah
Mar 7 2006, 11:38 AM
Not bad at all thanks. Just about recovered from Grade 6 theory last week, and trying very hard not to join in with the Grade 7 challenge that looks as though it's happening in the summer challenge.

Whilst I thank you for acknowledging my immortality, let's see how badly I failed before making future plans.
Hi everyone, just got back from taking a pupil to her prep test. She got some very positive comments on her certificate.
Currently on industrial strength antibiotics to clear a sinus infection that was affecting my balance.
Little Alexander has Balenitis (look it up in a medical dictionary if you don't know what it is...too grusome!) so is also on antibiotics.
Would love a nice cuppa, anyone got some tea in the go?
Katyjay- hope you're feeling better soon.

There's always tea on the go here, Jod. Regular, Earl Grey, peppermint, camomile, you name it we've got it.....

Earl grey please, no milk or sugar.

There you go, Jod. Enjoy.
Boo, the sheery I can live without. The driving's a monumental nuisance, and the weepiness is just indescribably stupid. Ho hum.
Well, I'm off to get some fresh air - a walk to the post office. See y'all later.

I get those when I go back to the harp and overpractice after not practising for a while. Unfortunately I think prevention is easier than cure. Generally I find it helps to be practising regularly, and if I haven't been, to build up from scratch, then I develop callouses naturally and slowly that help rather than hinder, by protecting my fingers a bit!!
Did you manage to sort them out at all?
katyjay: eeek! Hope it clears up soon

I can now officially play all my major 2 octave scales at 130. Phew. Actually I am capable of playing them faster but they're all *reliable* (so far...) at that speed.
Working my way slowly through the minors now, ridiculously Eb melodic and harmonic didn't cause too many problems, but then I got stuck on F minors for pity's sake

Hello everyone

They have let me use these 2 periods of school to search for duets

They have asked me would I do a duet with a girl in my year, the only problem is she has been trained MT and I am being trained classically

Does anyone know any good duets for someone around mezzo-soprano range and someone slghtly above tenor?
