I have a major dilemma: G7 piano in summer (july) but ive not even learnt my peices or scales half way not even THINKING about aural
OR
G6 violin AND G7 piano in Novemeber along with Eisteddfod (competition for performing arts, including music and im definately entering at least 5/6 classes)

That looks like quite a heavy workload for November!

How close to being ready are you for your grade 6 violin?

The thing is the Jersey Instrumental Service only does exams in May (which my teacher said was too soon) and November

The closing date for the next exam period is 28/4/06 (presuming you're doing AB grades). You, I guess, have got the time between now and then to decide about your piano grade 7.

See how things go. Are you likely to do some of the same pieces at the Eisteddfod as for your grades? That may slightly reduce your workload.

and either Memory(learning peice by heart) and/or set peice on piano and/or set peice on violin

May also do French

There's a long time to go 'til the Eisteddfod. I think first you've got to see if you're going to do piano grade 7 next term or not. When you have an idea of when your piano grade 7 is likely to be, you can then decide how much you can cope with in the Eisteddfod without over exerting yourself.

Glad Apricot is on the mend.

Often, if you're not playing as well as you know you can, it may be because you're tired. It's better if you wait until you're less tired. Maybe practice in the morning, when you've just had a decent night's sleep?

We could opt out in the upper 6th, but only a couple of people did. It's a waste of time. I fail to see what it adds to the rest of my A-level grades rolleyes.gif.

It doesn't add anything. It's just a pointless waste of everybody's time (my teacher doesn't enjoy it either). As I progress this year, I find myself becoming increasingly disillusioned with VIth Form, the A-level exam system and my school in particular. I'm hoping Uni will be a bit better.

It is, somewhat. At least there you're left to your own devices and aren't made to do anything; of course, if you don't attend lectures you won't pass the exam, but that's your problem.

Are you disillusioned with maths, or just the rest of the stuff you have to put up with?

The more I read about General Studies, the more glad I am that my sixth-form college didn't offer it. Cheer up Treebs and Nicki, it'll soon be over, and you can embark on the Ritual Burning of course notes.

This may well come across as arrogant, so I'll apologise in advance. In terms of subjects, all of them are easier than I thought they'd be (after the tedious amount of warnings about them beforehand). Particularly in Physics, the AS exams seem to be very easy - just a case of hitting the right points on the markscheme (so no change from GCSE ph34r.gif ). It seems to me that when it's possible to get as many people getting 100% in modules as you do in my school, the exams need to be made harder.

And on a more individual level, this year I've noticed more and more how sad some of the rules in my school are. They are just rules for the sake of rules, and everytime I try and question them I get no explanations and I've even got in trouble for it. And it's just becoming very irritating to me now mad.gif

I wish I could tell you it gets better when you go out to work sad.gif I suppose it does, depending on your employer and the job you do, but you do have to keep to the little rules if you want to break the big ones wink.gif

I've been told I'm turning into a grumpy old man by some of my friends dry.gif Maybe I'm just blindly confident, but at the moment (Grade 8 aside for a sec) I see no real challenges on the horizon, and so I'm just getting a bit bored. I need a hobby or summat ph34r.gif

I concur with Deborah; I'm doing a PhD so at least I get to attempt to stretch myself as best I can. I have As at A-level, a first-class degree, was top of my subject for three years, blah blah blah. Although it's not poltically correct to blow one's own trumpet ph34r.gif.

I realised that at university: in the first week, we had many scheduled freshers events, most of which were tedious. It took AP and me half a day to realise we didn't have to be herded around like sheep as it really didn't matter. Just hang in there....

There's nowt wrong with being a grumpy old man - I'm sure I was actually born 40!

Perhaps you need to see if you can stretch yourself a bit further. OK, you're focussed on your Grade 8 at the moment, but on Thursday morning, start learning a challenging piece or working on improving your technique.

If you're looking for a new challenge altogether, I know a clarinet teacher with a few vacancies wink.gif Seriously, is there anything that you've always wanted to do - play a new sport? learn a language? take up a new instrument? learn cordon bleu cookery (most women adore men who can cook wink.gif)? worthy voluntary work for the good folk of Buckinghamshire? Think about it, and if it's feasible, do it!
