I bought some bass clef cufflinks the other day; so I now have a pair of treble clef ones and a pair of bass clef ones. Sadly, they're too different to put a treble on one cuff and a bass on the other

Liam, if I may ask, just out of curiosity: I recall you saying a while ago that you made a suit for a job interview; how does the bill of materials for making a suit oneself compare to buying one in a shop?

YAP, i generally find that the greatest variance in cost is down to the materials. overall, the suits i have made for myself have more wear and i use them a lot more, knowing that i'm wearing something unique. only a couple of my suits have ended up costing more than if were to buy one similar, but that is usually becuase i've messed it up a little bit and had to either restart or take bits out and do it again. the only downside is time. however, with my picky taste, it might just actually take me that long to choose a pre-made suit. Also, i get a discount on materials at the shop where I go, but if i'm after something really special i generally go further afield, but therefore don;t get the discount. Why the curiosity YAP?
EDIT: add to the list of downsides very sore hands and occasional bleeding fingers onto costly material. ouch.

My curiosity arose through me thinking about the decline in popularity of people in general making clothes compared to 20 or 30 years ago. The reason I was given for this decline was due to clothes being cheaper as they're made overseas and imported; and that there are fewer housewives with time to make clothes for their family as they're out working, which means they can afford pre-made clothes anyway. So from your answer I'd guess that both of these reasons are true to a certain extent. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to answer

.
Incidentally, I have a friend who's very much into knitting, and is inundated by requests from people for jumpers and such

. Do you knit, or just do tailoring?

Mar 28 2006, 10:40 AM
No worries. I'm halfway through making one at the moment but it's been in the same needle of my machine for about a month now and i've lost the original inspiration that i had to make it. when i do buy suits, i always have them fitted and hand-made. It's not being snobby, it's just that i like to have a nicely fitted suit.

I'll have a browse at home tonight nicki. I'm actually sure that some are on the net. I sold a couple last year on ebay, but made a rubbish profit. Yeah, i love finishing clothes and realising that it's actually been worth the effort. I tend to lose sight that I have other priorities like school-work though.

this is something i did for a friend who's in a band i know. not my usual choice of material - it looks like it could fall apart in a couple of seconds, but he's still got it and it was only made to be worn for two nights anyway.

Brian Heap produces a book, annually, which provides a good summary of where one can study each course. Each section is arranged by entry requirements, which will help to narrow down your choices. It doesn't tell you about the institutions themselves, but it helps to know what places to be looking at.
