PD, you're right... especially be careful (without wanting to sound like an old crony!) drinking at a young age, you don't want to kill off too many brain cells or get hooked on the stuff before you've even had a chance to have a life. There are some alcoholic drinks that I like, and it can be fun to have a giggle with friends but as you get older you (hopefully!) learn that it's possible to have just as much fun stone cold sober - and you don't get hungover, kill brain cells, or do anything reeeeally regrettable (hopefully) plus you never have to ask other people what you did the night before! And there is NOTHING fun about being sick because you drank too much.

I just want to agree with purple dolphin and sarah-flute : either drink sensibly or don't drink. I've just returned from a school trip on which several people drank too much vodka and coke and became paralytic. Trust me, it is no fun to have to stop them throwing themselves off a seven-storey balcony, stop them from climbing over the balcony walls, pick them up off the floor or stay up all night with them to give them water and stop them from going out onto the balcony again. The people who drank are probably going to be suspended when we return to school in September but I just can't stop thinking about how they could have died if it hadn't been stopped in time (I didn't drink btw)

average of about 6hrs rehersals (both full and sectionals) a day, first day we had 2 and 1/2 hours rest (2 hour slots for meals, half hour for break) between 10.30am till 8.30 pm...
all we did was rehearse!!but we did a concert on thursday that was just soo fun!
i agree with the drink sensibly/dont drink thing that seems to be going on....one of my 'friends' (ie we're not friends anymore) once very proudly told me that she'd been to a party, got bladdered, been sick twice (along with just about everyone else there) and then had a really bad hangover....
sadly, i was unable to find the entertainment in that, but maybe thats just me! 
the thing that i found most sad was that i wanted to have a bit of alcohol at my 16th, not for everyone to get bladdered, but just because i thought as adults it would be ok...but after seeing her performance at another party (trying to get as much alcohol down her neck as she could, followed by attempting to be the centre of attention all night and basically meaning most people there hated her!) i decided it wouldn't be a great idea, especially not in my parent's new living room with a glass fronted cabinet and new lamp shades...but i did find it quite sad that i couldn't trust someone to be around alcohol and not get bladdered or smash up our living room
its stupid really, people think getting drunk makes them look soo cool, but its just for attention. luckily 2 mates in our main 'bunch' don't drink by choice, one doesn't drink by religion and the rest of us (minus 3) drink, but only sensibly..still saying that, our group has kinda moved apart recently, so the new group is minus the 3 drunkies and plus about 10 more sensible drinkers

That appears to me as a very serious case of stupidness.
Drinking does not make you look cool, people think that they are men, and they can take drink, but they can't. Their system is not used to it, and to get paralytic is absolutely ridiculous, and I really hope they do get suspended.
I just hope none of them were violent!!
agree completely with purple dolphin...i personally detest all alcohol but understand that i have no influence over others but if they do drink should do it proportionally.
I didn't drink because I thought that there was a time and place for everything and that a hotel in Spain was not the time or place. Nobody was violent but one girl was trying to throw herself off the balcony (seven storeys up). There was ###### to pay when the teachers found out (it went too far and so one girl went to tell the teachers while the rest of us tried to calm stuff down). It has put me off drinking for a long time.
My experiences the other night, and that story definitly has.
Yes. I just can't believe how it happened so quickly. It also spoiled the trip for other people.

I work in a pub (only waitressing) and someone asked me for a "muddy puddle" once which is orange squash and coke...I tried it later, it's not really that bad!

One day of our tour, people got so drunk they were sick. Also, on the last night the hotel said we could ahve free drinks, which meant a lot of people could have as many drinks as they wanted, even if they were underage..

I agree - it's irresponsible to drink to excess and expect other people to pick up the pieces/clear up the mess/carry them home/look out for them etc. And I think the government's drinking hours ideas to be irresponsible and stupid. (Well at least I take some kind of comfort in that I didn't vote for the idiots in power.) We live a few doors down from a pub and every weekend evening you can hear shouts and yells and arguments and fights in the middle of the night. I think it's getting worse too - it was definitely never this bad the first 10 years we were here - it's been in the last few it's really gone downhill. The problem with drunks is that they don't seem able to whisper or speak quietly!! (As well as knocking on the door/vandalising cars/shops etc, leaving beer cans on my windowsill and nasty patches on the pavement...........)

That and being paralytic, it's downright disgraceful, why would you ever drink yourself into a stage where you can't walk and you can barely function?!
And you can hurt yourself and not notice too, my sister walked into a wall when she was nearly paralytic once, and she nearly broke her wrist... but the alcohol numbs the pain, and you don't realise until the morning.

I'm ashamed to say that I had a similar accident once, I wasn't paralytic, but I was very drunk and I walked into a lampost, didn't feel a thing until the following morning, the doctor said I just about cracked my skull. I'm still embarrassed about that, and I don't ever get extremely drunk.

I totally agree with everything about drink! I'm happy to say I've never been to the stage of memory loss/throwing up/not being able to walk. I do enjoy a drink now and then but I've never felt the need to have more than two pints in an evening even tho i will be 18 in a few months.
I usually find its the shallow youths that feel the need to get totally wasted and by the sounds of it most people on here have the right attitude towards drink which is good.
Us musicians may be zany but at least we're sensible!

I don't like alchohol. Don't really like the taste either. I only drink if I have to in social functions. EVen then a cocktail (like pina colada or marguarita) is prefered. I get awfully sick on wines. 
It causes me to feel wozzy, then I would need to throw up, and finally sleep it off

don't particularly like beer, wine with lemonade is ok! and we had some nice vodka stuff at a party once..vodka and lemon i think which was nice but couldn't drink too much of it
and champagne...(hehe expensive taste) so i should be ok as a student really - apart from the vodka drinks, the only alcohol i actually like is champagne and i'll never be able to afford enough to get smashed

had hoped for a merit, but i did really mess up the exam and it was just after gcse's too, so its not that bad really. but i was heavily critisised for pedalling (according to my teacher - i don't have the comment sheet yet) so i'll have to practice that lots more
so not over the moon with myself (should have practised more!!), but thats another exam done, and i wouldn't retake it to get a better mark so i suppose that means im happy with it!

erm working on an associates (?) diploma with victoria college of music the pieces are gorg! (scarlatti sonata in d minor, beethoven sonata in c minor 1st mov., chopin raindrop prelude) but the scales list looks a bit evil!(double octaves, first and second position arpeggios, daren't even look at the rest!) should be very interesting learning about all the background though - thats what i missed with the ABRSM exams, felt like i didn't really know the pieces that well as the only background i knew was the little bit on the bottom of the pages

(she took the mick out of me for ages after that - i was like wooooooww! really? are you sure? sure its me not someone else? i was sat waiting for her to phone back and say the results were mixed up!) but someone did say a while back that its because of human nature that we focus on the negative things!
