Any linguists out there??? Do you have to understand every single word to do well in GCSE Spanish? I can normally get the gist of stuff quite well but my vocab isn't fantastic. I was the only person in Spanish today and my teacher and I went through two past papers and I have a page and a half of new vocab to learn.
I couldn't say for Spanish, but in general, no - one of the skills of being a linguist is "getting the gist" and working out meaning from context. I was still doing that in some instances in my 4th year Russian exams.
Remember that depending on the particular task you have to do, you don't always need to read in detail/understand every word: getting the gist of something is a skill in itself

Well anyway, as I was saying, plum jam is great with cheddar cheese in sandwiches.
What is it with plum jam today? mrbouffant wanted plum jam on his toasted teacake this morning, and now katyjay's putting it in cheddar cheese sandwiches

Then perhaps you'd like to help out around here today. There's a stack of washing-up to do, and we need to get ready for the early(ish) morning customers who will want tea, coffee, toast, toasted teacakes and possibly some Danish pastries.
Or do you have revision to do?

I feel left out. No exams for me.
But I ought to learn all the piano parts I'm required to play for my pupil's grade exams, and in the case of my Trinity pupils, gem up on their pieces to help them with their musical understanding section.
I suppose that's revising of sorts. The I've got a concert programme to write, and a sponsorship contract to sort out. The there's the Tax return.
So even without exams, there's enough to keep me busy.
Just think when you lot leave school and college deadlines still exist!

May 25 2006, 10:19 AM
No

The amount of English I have to do is huge! Less so for Tony Harrison and Antony and Cleo, but for Jane Eyre, they could ask you to talk about any chapter. I made chapter summaries on paper, but only got up to chapter 14 so have scrapped that idea and just reading and annottating the book. Only 24 more chapters to go

Tony Harrison question - I am either going to somehow do ok or really badly!
Antony and Cleo, the closed text, it depends what they ask, but I think I have to do 2 questions for them - GAH!

The thing is, that Sociology had literally so many facts to revise, I have had to leave English. I enjoy the subject, but not the teachers

Try and eat something...even if it is just a yoghurt which you can slurp down. Revision break will be shorter today, I didn't mean to leave it this late, but I couldn't have done much else differently.
