Simple interest - is interest that is paid on the original sum.
Compound interest - is interest paid both on the original sum and on the interest previously earned.
Example:
Suppose we have an original sum of 100, and an interest rate of 10%.
Year 1 simple interest = 10 (being 10% of 100), so total at the end of year 1 = 110
Year 1 compound interest = 10, so total at the end of year 1 = 110
BUT
Year 2 simple interest = 10 again, so total at the end of year 2 = 120
Year 2 compound interest = 11 ('cos that's 10% of 110) so total at the end of year 2 = 121.
Year 3 simple interest = 10 again, so total at the end of year 3 = 130
Year 3 compound interest = 12.1 so total at the end of the year = 133.1
Year 4 simple interest = 10, total at the end of the year = 140
Year 4 compound interest = 13.31, so total at the end of the year = 146.41
Compound interest gets much bigger much quicker (posh word - it's a geometrical progression) than simple interest (an arithmetic progression).
How to calculate how much you've got in total if your interest rate is r and your initial sum is S and you invest for n years:
Simple interest - Total = S*(1+(n*r))
Compound interest - Total = S*(1+r)^n
I thought it was something like that! I must be doing a different course from Oddball because we only needed to know that for one of the modular exams, not the final one.

So, 2500/100 = 25, 25*6 = 150 = 6%. Correct so far?
Adding that on, it's 2650.
As the interest stays the same, do I just add on another 150? Then it becomes 2800, which is what I have as my answer...

Which area of maths do you think is the hardest, Oddball? I've always found geometry fairly difficult because I can't 'see' the problem in my head.

Right, the first thing is that we're going to assume that the second spin is completely independent of the first spin.
So the probability of the second spin coming up with the number 1 is the same as the probability that the first spin comes up no.1. 0.3 in both cases.
When you have independent events, the probability of both is the found by multiplying the two probabilities together.
So the probability is 0.09.
The thing with me and maths, is that I almost always get good grades but I sometimes get a mental block about the most stupid things, namely surds. I had to know them for my Module 3 exam in November and my teacher must have spent at least 2 months trying to explain them to me until I finally grasped them. I got the question in the exams right but my maths teacher wrote in my leaving book:
'It was a pleasure teaching you, even when it was surds!'
Oh, and when the probabilities of two events are mutually exclusive (if one happens, then the other one can't happen), you add the separate probabilities to find the probability of both events happening.

Simple interest is the interest on the capital sum invested each year, and is as if you take the interest out once its earned and spend it on a holiday every year. Each year the capital earns the same amount of interest, which you then draw out and spend.
Compound interest works out the same in the first year but in the second year (and subsequent years) it is as if you re-invested the interest earned back into the savings account every year it was earned instead of spending it.

Just had a phone call from the minister for whom I'm singing in a funeral on Friday. We've changed venues, so we now have an organ and organist. That's the good news, it means I don't have to use a CD player for the hymns.
The bad news is that the crematorium manager (who's a complete Jobsworth) won't give me the organist's phone number so I can't discuss the music for my solo with them. And there apparently won't be any time on the day to practise with them either. There's no way I'm singing with someone I don't know so I'll have to do my solo unaccompanied after all.
