Rainbow
Night night! Good luck with the exam (I've got an exam on Monday as well!)
jonscott14
Hi everone! how are those taking the exams finding the revision?
nicki_flute
I am thinking: It is much nicer outside than it is in my room to revise.

I am on longer breaks at the moment, I can't work in the afternoon.
Rainbow
Terrible! I fell asleep doing maths revision yesterday. How are you on the English language stuff, Jon? I'm doing AQA A by the way.
jonscott14
Me too - breaks rule - its quite nice to sit outside in the sun listening to music - sham i have to revise as well!! what do you have for your next exam nicki?
Wobby
Hey, how is everyone? Probably revising... sad.gif

i'm ok on my english language - i'm doing aqa as well - still struggling with some of the poems - i love half caste - have you seen the video that goes with it?!!
Rainbow
Nope, we're doing Cluster 1. I find all of Paper 1 really difficult (actually, I find Paper 2 difficult as well!). Do you know what the examiners are looking for when they mark the writing sections? Apparently, I shouldn't use brackets in my writing so much and instead I should use parenthetic commas as, apparently, brackets are an "affectation".

Music on Monday, then History on Wednesday and then that's me finished.

My breaks involve watching tennis on the TV, eating food (like ice cream) smile.gif
jonscott14
not really, i would assume it is the use of good english, wich i suppose doesn't involve brackets - although they are very useful - so being able to use them effectively should get you marks - but the way the mark scheme does means you probably don't get any marks for them.

I mean, what sort of things do you have to include in your argue/persuade/advise or inform/explain/describe to get an A*?
jonscott14
i don't know, we haven't done many past papers - i think they ask you what they want - or give you a choice.
nicki_flute
Bye guys, off for last revision session before dinner smile.gif
jonscott14
I have to go - time for a bit more revision in the sun - with orange juice and biscuits of course!!
Oddball
I haven't done any revision today *feels bad*
Rainbow
Ditto - am really stressing about English, biology, French and history.
Oddball
Which History board are you doing? If it's OCR, I have something that may help...
Rainbow
OCR Modern World.

If I don't get an A*, the history department at my school will kill me huh.gif
Oddball
So you're not doing Medicine through time / American West?
Rainbow
Nope, but they sound more interesting than endless Treaty of Versailles/Germany/Second World War stuff!

Oddball, do you know anything about how the writing pieces are marked in English language and what you need for an A*?
Wobby
I have a list of notes that our teacher gave us for English Language - Paper 1, Section B:

-----------------------

Argue

- Two points of view: must be aware of oppose point of view and include it
- Need to include an introduction that tells of what you are writing about and your views to the issue
- Arguement must develop progressively, logically and must flow
- A conclusion to review over the points you made and sum them up

[A*-B Material]

- Rhetorical questions
- Strong statements
- The opposing viewpoints
- Quotations
- Dismiss opposing viewpoint
- Sarcasm and or humor

-----------------------

Persuade

- Persuasion only needs ONE view point
- Emotive language
- Humerous opening (not necessary, but good)
- Emotive details
- Touching sentiments
- Rhetoric Language (i.e. effective language)
- Similes
- Repetition
- Rhetorical Questions

(No clear cut A*-B material here. Just make sure you have the above covered, and it's then down to whether the examiner likes your style of writing and flare)

-----------------------

Advise

- Offer advice whilst giving outline of problem OR Give an introduction to the problem, then offer advice
- Appropriate tone (formality, no sland or colloquiality)
- An explanation the problem
- Advice to solve it with explanation of why this method is particularly effective
- Use examples
- Relate advice to what has previously happened

(Again, no clear cut A*-B material. Just make sure you have the above covered, and it's then down to whether the examiner likes your style of writing and flare.)

-----------------------

I personally would advise you to choose Argue no matter what happens, although it is personal preference. If you happen to be a very manipulative person, then maybe you should choose Persuade, or if you happen to work part-time as an Agony Aunt or something, the maybe you should choose Advise. However, seeing as there's more grounding for you to cover on Argue, I think it's easier, in my own opinion.

Hope all this helps! smile.gif

Oddball
For an A*, it needs to stand out. English Language, it'll be to argue, persuade or advise. You need to do each of these in really good detail, and over 2 sides for the essay questions really. Make sure it stands out from the crowd, the examiner will have a HUGE pile of papers to mark, and they're likely to nearly all start off with the same sentence pretty much. Try starting with a quotation smile.gif

I'm going for the A, but because my coursework isn't great, a B will do me.
Rainbow
Cheers Wobby, that's great! Why wouldn't you include the opposite point of view for Persuade, though? We were always taught to start with an introduction, then mention two arguments, then mention the opposite point of view and refute it, then go back to our arguments and sum it up.

You wouldn't happen to have anything like that for any of Paper 2, would you?

I'll have a look around though - I might have some good revision notes. Remember that when you Argue, you are trying to get someone to see your point of view anyway. I think what you are talking of is 'Argue and Persuade' - it's normally Option 4. Sometimes it's 'Argue and Advise' or 'Persuade and Advise' too I think... smile.gif

Thanks! Wobby, you are so going to get an A*. I find English quite difficult, but I was predicted an A*, probably due to the fact that that was what I got on my coursework. We were told NEVER under any circumstances to do the advise as it was really hard to score well on.
Wobby
Yeah, I know - we had to do a mock-mock one of each except the one we did in the mock, and I got an A on the Persuade, and a C on Advise!!! Doh! Well, that means I'm definitely doing Argue. It's my ambition to get an A* on the English Papers - might be tough though. I think I got 102/108 or something on Coursework, so that's on track at least, but my teacher never told me what I got for Speaking! Well, I hope I can do it - I only got A in the mock though! sad.gif

[Better hide, before people think I'm being too pessimistic for such a grade! ph34r.gif]

I have more notes!!!

----------------------

"- Argue: If you write to argue, your response will be expected to include two opposing points of view: if you are arguing in favour of or against something, there must be a case to argue against.

- Persuade: Persuasive writing can use argument, but that is not always necessary. Often, the persuasion can come from developing just one 'angle'. Also, it is common to use emotive approaches which touch the reader's emotions.

- Advise: If you are advising someone, your response should be clear, logical and move to a definite conclusion. Advice is of little use if it is not convincing.

- Inform: Informative writing must give facts and relevant opinions. The information should be detailed and relevant.

- Explain: When you write to explain, you are giving reasons, saying why or how something happens or happened. Rather than just providing information, you will be expected to give insight and explanation throughout.

- Describe: The examiner will be looking for description, not narrative. In other words, you will be asked to describe a person, place or incident but are most unlikely to be asked to produce a story.

- Blending The Skills: If you choose the final question on the papers you will have to blend your writing skills. So, for example, if you were asked to argue and persuade, your response should include both types of writing, and the same would be the case if you were required to inform, explain and describe.

- Universal Skills: Keep track of purpose and audience - use appropriate language. If you asked to write for people your age, keep your writing less formal, but try not to go into colloquialisms. Must have introduction, conclusion, and logical development in paragraphs. Use quotations, anecdotes, humour and imagery.

Thanks! I bet you do get an A* though. There's no way I'll have got an A* for Lit (or even an A or B after the disastrous exam) so I really want to do well in Lang to compensate. We've never done a mock paper 2 though, and I've always struggled on paper 1 (I got the A* boundary mark in my mock, after struggling loads).

Ditto - am really stressing about English, biology, French and history.

You can do it Rainy!

QUOTE(Oddball @ Jun 3 2006, 04:40 PM) *

For an A*, it needs to stand out. English Language, it'll be to argue, persuade or advise. You need to do each of these in really good detail, and over 2 sides for the essay questions really. Make sure it stands out from the crowd, the examiner will have a HUGE pile of papers to mark, and they're likely to nearly all start off with the same sentence pretty much. Try starting with a quotation smile.gif

I'm going for the A, but because my coursework isn't great, a B will do me.

Good advice. smile.gif
Wobby
Aah, I'm sure you'll do fine! smile.gif

Fingers crossed for an A* in everything. It's really annoying, because I have high expectations due to my brother's 9A*s and 2As... But then again, he took media! wink.gif

Darn, I knew I should have taken German instead of Geography - from what we have covered in French, I'm sure another Language would have been a doddle... biggrin.gif

You're stressed about French - it's not that bad is it? How did you do in the mocks? Biology's annoying, but providing you're good at Chemistry and Physics, you should be able to make it through fine. Did you find out the marks you need in the papers to get certain grades? I need 108/180 in Science to get an A*... shouldn't be too bad. At least I know I'm guaranteed a D on -9 marks, and almost a C on 2 marks! biggrin.gif

I think the reason why I'm stressed about French is that I got a really high score in the mock - 356/360! My teacher is so perfectionistic, especially with me, so I feel like what I'm doing is never good enough. We can do Media instead of English lit but I would probably have done even worse in it - they had to do COMIC STRIPS for their exam!

Thanks for the support everyone.

Hmm, my friend who got 10 A* did French and German, and she found doing 2 languages really hard (not because of the content but how to arrange her time/not slip into a different language)

Yep, it's pretty bad for French and Spanish. There are about 5 of us in my Spanish who also do French and 3 of us have a really good teacher for French and are quite passionate about languages, so if we do something one way in French, we always tell our Spanish teacher if she tries to make us do it a different way (like, we got to do our controlled coursework piece for French over 5 lessons but our Spanish teacher made us do the Spanish controlled conditions piece in 2 lessons, despite us telling her how we'd done it in French!). I always seem to start a sentence in one language and finish it in the other.

Woah! All I know is that I've got 104/120 on the coursework and 150/150 in the Year 10 staged assessment.

If that's what you got in French, then you'll be fine. I got similar marks (although I'm doing a different paper, so in total it's out of 100), and I think I got about 90/100. The language boundaries tend to be quite low, especially on Reading (and IMHO Reading is easier anyway). Don't worry, you'll do fine - the marks don't show up anyway, just whether you got an A* or not, so no need to try and go for 100%! wink.gif

Hmm, I guess so, but in my list of things, Music and French are quite low down, because for both, the Coursework is sorted out (pretty near maximum). I was worried a bit about music, because I did not know all these random things, like Kenkeni or Gong Ageng, etc. But languages were fine, seeing as I knew the tests were easy. But I guess the Speaking test does take a lot of preparation, and you can get muddled up with the languages. But I think French and German is harder to muddle up than, say French and Spanish, French and Italian, or Spanish and Italian - all the romantic languages.

150/150? I got two A*s, two As and two Bs on the Year 10 modules! But I maxed my coursework all but 1, which is worth more than the modules I think, which is why my required grade is quite low.

Yep, my French 'revision' consists of watching French DVDs atm. Yep, the grade boundaries are always higher for listening, but listening is loads harder. I'd love to get a really high score in French though, as I want to take it for A level.

I don't know, I didn't do 2 languages....but at GCSE level, there is so much, some exams you can't do as much prep as you would like.

I'm doing OCR science so what I do might be quite different. I found the Year 10 exam fairly easy but the coursework really hard! I'm finding the Year 11 stuff quite difficult as well.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, had better go and do some revision now!

Yeah, I do feel a bit guilty that I'm not doing as much prep as I should... but there's not much I can do for English but learn what I need to include, which is a bit worrying. Maths is fine, Science needs a little review over everything, but Geography is tough too - I need to learn all these case studies, like Psychology! sad.gif

I agree, our AS German set all do German and French, 1 of them dropped out of German before the exams, 1 has dropped it now he's sat the exams and the other 3 are continuing. One of them is doing French German and Latin for A2 and GCSE Greek ph34r.gif
