and it's all getting damaged by certain people

We have ICT sponsorship, but we don't have any timetabled ICT lessons until we get to yr 10! They do it on this rota type thing where a year group at a time have one lesson a week off timetable to do ICT, and it switches between yrs 7, 8 and 9 between the terms.

well check out my music department - 1 teacher without a degree in music and who can't even tune a violin, 1 room with 10 keyboards and an out of tune piano which used to be the school garage, and a rolling blackboard, when apparently "every teaching room in the school has an electronic whiteboard"... well i suppose not much teaching goes on in that room. that's why im not doing GCSE music.

we didnt even have ict lessons in year9!

sibelius! you'd be lucky to get that on even one computer at my school, let alone all of them! and we only have one piano, which hasn't been tuned for about 3 years, and it's been wheeled across the yard and upstairs and downstairs so much for concerts etc that it's utterly useless now!

aww...poor you! But at my school you kind of feel embarrassed playing on the piano if you're not that good...some people are amazing!

My friend loved Sibelius when we were doing gcse and she wanted to buy it thinking it was about £50 but then got told it was £400...

I know it's such a stupid amount! The music room at my school is always locked (apart from for lessons, obviously!) so I never get to go in, apart from Jazz Band on a Wednesday lunchtime! We entered Music For Youth with a band of 10, and got seriously whooped by a 46 piece jazz band from Chester.

All of our music room, and some of our library computers have Sibelius 3 on them. Plus we have a grand piano in the music room, plus another in the hall, plus other upright pianos dotted around in convenient places (practise rooms, drama studio etc) Our form was lucky enough to have the maths computer room as our form room last year, and the nice ICT people put a copy of sibelius on one of those computers for us and our form tutor (who was a music teacher) to use.

Our school has 1 music room, 4 practice rooms which are falling apart and a "studio" with keyboards and guitars in. No computers, no Sibelius. 1 teacher who is good but is disorganised and has personal problems.

I'm so jealous

But, having said that, when we got our specialist status, we got £400,000 which is being spent on a state of the art concert hall/studio, which should be finished by the end of next academic year, so I'll have the whole of year 11 to benefit from it! Hopefully it comes with a teacher who actually HAS a degree in music

We have one grand piano in the hall which is locked and has not tuned for a few decades. There's two and a half (it's literally half a piano) more around the school. The practice rooms are rubbish but supposed to be getting a makeover in the holidays. Our music room is good, lots of computers but no sibelius. Instead we have a "mastering music" thing. Teacher is good but his claims of working with Tom Jones, he used to be in a famous rock band and knowing lots of famous people are while valid, a little too far fetched for any of us to belive. Lots of keyboards and equipment though.
Oh yeah, my school won the MTV music video awards. Even though I had no part of it what-so-ever, I'm very proud.

Off-topic but - have a look at the glass in the windows. It'll be thicker at the bottom of the panes than at the top - glass slowly sags over many years.

Exactly. It's quite normal to flip old glass over every 50 years or so to even things back out. Due to this sagging, at schools one can easily spot panes of glass which have been replaced due to having been smashed with footballs etc.

Talking of liquids and solids, I heard custard can be a liquid and a solid at the same time.

It's a non-Newtonian liquid. Custard is a suspension of grains of cornstarch in water; if you punch it, or otherwise impact it, the water is pushed out from between the grains of cornstarch and it momentarily behaves as a solid. Once the impact is over, though, the water comes back in and it behaves as a liquid again.
I once saw on a science programme (Braniac, for those concerned) someone run across a swimming pool full of custard. To prove the point, they stopped moving and sank down up to their knees. Getting out proved tricky, though, as the harder one tries to move in the liquid the more it acts like a solid and stops one from moving

I think I saw a programme once with Fearn Cotton doing a similar experiment, running along a small trough of cornflour. The theory was the same, but the showmanship wasn't anywhere near as fun - the sight of half a dozen cement mixers making industrial custard is quite something

Oh good, it's not just me who's terrible at swimming! I have negative buoyancy (silly dense bones apparently), so have a natural tendency to sink like a stone. My dad has it too; once he went diving and didn't need a weight belt

If one tries to run across custard, the impact between one's feet and the surface of the custard is enough to make it do the non-Newtonian thing of behaving like a solid for a second or so, enough to have made the next step.

Can I just check something before I fill a big tub with custard and attempt to walk across it.
Is this like "Birds" custard made with cornflour, or is it the "real" custard made with eggs and milk. I love custard, but would not want to drown in my tub.
