Well, we're all packed up and nearly ready to go. My husband thought it was all going very well until he noticed the six plastic crates that hadn't gone in yet...
No exam results yet.

Katyjay's going to be in suspense rather longer than we hoped.
See you all on 7th August.

Hi CE, and Noodle. If you're both still here. I'm just popping in... while I can still keep my eyes open.... I'm exhausted. A combination of the heat, and getting up far too early and going to bed far too late last week, and not having had a proper lie in since, as my routine of sleeping late has been disturbed!!

Did you bring your 'puter with you?

No, couldn't fit in the car, so I'm borrowing this one instead.

The backspace is small on this keyboard, which is a bit annoying...
I'm having a good holiday thanks. My grandparents are currently watching a play at the theatre, so I'm stuck at home on my own. I am planning to see my cousins in Wimbledon tomorrow.

That figures somewhere in my plans for the day. Hope I don't upset the people at the bottom of the garden today though - they came round at 8.00 yesterday evening to enquire if anyone in my house was playing a musical instrument, because the sound was carrying. OK, I might have been playing something loud, high and atonal at the time, but the only reason the windows were open (and therefore that they could hear) is because of this ^"&*(! heat.

Here's looking forward to the day it's a bit cooler!
When the doorbell rang, I'd just finished some quick study practice, so one of the later pieces in Progressive Studies Vol 2. Lots of augmented triads and a top A for good measure. If it's war, there are plenty more where they came from *cough* Edwin Roxburgh *cough*.
Or maybe they just don't like Finzi

I'll have a think to see what I can do, but they might have to just tolerate it until it cools down.

Fine thanks. Back from my first piano lesson since my results.
I was rather surprised when my teacher's comment was "so when are you going to do Grade 6?" given that she'd been distinctly un-keen on my taking Grade 5 until I turned up with the pieces chosen and half-learned and offered to make the entry myself about a week before the closing date.

Jul 27 2006, 09:50 AM
To be honest, I don't know.
Grade 5 was what I originally set my mind to do, and I've done it. And I was very pleasantly surprised to get the distinction in it. But in a way it's happened too quickly (only a year of lessons) and was really because I was rebelling against the dreaded Waterman and Harewood.
Grade 6 would be a "nice to have", but the main thing is I want to widen my repertoire rather than slog through a tutor book. If I stay with this teacher I suspect I'll end up pushing for it as a way of playing "real" pieces.
On the other hand, changing teachers means making that difficult first phone call again - and I'm not sure if I've got the guts to do that.
Perverse, aren't I?

I haven't congratulated you on your theory result yet KJ, let alone your piano result. With a collection of results like that you have a right to feel very self-satisfied. When you think you've achieved all this as an adult learner, then there is hope for those who miss out on opportunities as children.

One tonic water with ice and lime.
Know the feeling about laundry - our heap thereof is the consequence of having been on holiday for a week.
Last holiday Misterjay managed to put my walking boots on top of a bottle of suncream which in turn was on the few remaining clean clothes in the suitcase - and then he closed the lid and leaned on it to fasten it.....
This holiday he managed to put a bottle of shampoo in without checking the top was fully closed.......

We'll have a heap (of laundry) post Cropredy. Kids are going to inlaws who always send back suitcases full of clean clothes. Fortunately cottage near Wells has a washing machine! Though now we have a tent that is big enough for everyone, I think I'm either going to have to do laundrette runs or face up to washing mountains after future hols. I don't even escape laundry when on holdiay.

Does she really expect you to continue with W & H now you've got distinction in grade 5? I think you're right - expand your repertoire first and then if you wanted to do another exam go for it. Did you look at any of the books suggested in your Viva Piano thread?
To be fair, we haven't looked at W&H since the exam, and I haven't raised the issue as I don't want to remind her that we were slogging through it.
I've been having fun the last couple of weeks playing the Mozart D minor Fantasia and Paul Harvey's Rumba Toccata, which was part of the present of music books that the participants at the Leicester concert gave me - all of which have kept me going rather nicely. And yes, I've looked at a fair few of the suggestions on that thread too.
The query about Grade 6 was because we were talking about what scales I do to start my practice each day - whether we should look at scales in thirds and staccato scales etc. regardless of whether I work to an exam or not.
