Smoothies? I have made a new updated version with vodka in it for those of you who are old enough. My dad showed me the recipe and I adapted it, but he won't drink any cos for some reason he is having a tee-total day for once. At least I'll be able to get some sleep tonight then!

Hey!!! I'm back (sorry to being the bad news lol) from Bristol/Somerset/Wales and well done to everyone who got their GCSE results!!! Apparently 97% of everyone who took them passed so that's good. I just hope they don't make them harder!!! (I think it's students working harder not exams getting easier...)What crazy things have been happening in the forum?! Even though it was only 5 days ago but hey...

Aug 25 2005, 07:09 PM
When you take GCSEs they don't exactly seem easy :-|
noodle
Aug 25 2005, 07:13 PM
No they never seem easy at the time until you get to the next level. Its a bit like doing grade 3 and thinking grade 2 wasn't so bad after all.
purple dolphin
Aug 25 2005, 08:23 PM
That's a good way of putting it I suppose. Why is that as soon as anyone does anything well, people just assume that the job/exam has got easier? There can be all sorts of reasons why the pass rate has increased; students work harder, teachers help more, exam questions are worded in a different way meaning that they still have to know the stuff but arejust tested differently, or as a last resort, maybe exams have got easier. Why put hard working students down?

Just as I was going to bed, guess what topic they had on the radio? (the above) Grrr! I was so fuming! I sent a text message (well I sent it and realised I'd made a mistake so sent it again), but don't know whether it got read out. I really need to stop sending text messages, but why are the media so presumptious?!

They need to be controversial so as to justify their existence when there is not much news

Yes, I know, but how annoying!! I worked blooming hard for my GCSEs and now they're telling me anyone could do well on them and they not creditable. *refrains from putting any more*

Yeah I think purple dolphin is right and I think people do work really really hard for their GCSE's!!! My friend says that she spent ages doing her coursework especially and only got 5 hours of sleep because of the clash with piano exams too so it doesn't sound easy to me!

But you know how wrong they are!
It's just annoying they put out these demoralising statements.

The only reason Nicki (and everyone else) got those excellent results was because they worked incredibly hard for them, not because the tests are getting any easier. Can't the government see that the teenage generation might
just be getting that little bit more intelligent?
purple dolphin
Aug 26 2005, 11:34 AM
Well, if you think about it, the government are always trying to put the younger generations down. The claim that all teenagers go out binge drinking, smash cars up etc. Just because a few people may do this doesn't mean that we all do. Teenagers work hard; the government just don't want to admit it.

The problem is that's exactly what the government are saying (well specifically that teachers and schools are working better because they're good

); but no one believes them.
I hate to sound pessimistic Nicki but this is something that you have to learn to brush off. When you've got your 5 As at A-level people will say that A-levels have got easier; and when you've got your first-class degree people will say it's easier to get those than it used to be. Take comfort, however from two things:
1) Even if GCSEs did get 'easier' you can't do any better than get an A* anyway;
2) People like to think that things have got harder even if they haven't if the results go up to be better than theirs (or even the same as): after all it's much more comforting to think the exams are easier, rather than

young people are doing better than you

.
I don't know how I feel on this one, I've been living with the exams are getting easier thing all my life; I just accept that maybe it's true, maybe it's not, but so long as you're getting marks like you are doing there's absolutely nothing to suggest that you're not doing just as well as anyone else ever has done. So chin up and be proud of your results, you've worked hard and deserve them: what matters is that you've done well at what you've been presented with, and that's all even the cleverest people in the world can do

.

Just while people are here... what's the difference between a BA(hons) in music, and BMus? I just noticed cos my brother's going to do his BMus at Huddersfield this September, but neil.clarinet has BA(hons) in music. Is there a difference?
