What are you doing today, katyjay?
A sky-high heap of paperwork,
a sky-high heap of laundry drinking a cup of peppermint tea and listening to / learning music for Woodford

Question - why is it that regardless of how carefully you pack and unpack headphones the leads always get hopelessly tangled?
Oddball

I don't know - no matter how hard I try to wrap them up neatly, it never works.

I know exactly what you mean! Last week I went camping and took my headphones, and despite carefully wrapping the lead, then securing it with elastic bands, I still had to spend ages untangling them.

So is the answer to not waste time on how you put them away, but to say "stuff it, they're going to be a mess when I unpack them....."

How on earth do I make x the subject of this formula?
CODE
x + 1 x + 2
------ = -------
y+ 4 2y + 3
?
I'm majorly confused.

Give me five minutes to look at this, it's a good twenty years since last I tried it.
Hang on! I've got a mistake to fix....
OK, so the first thing I'm going to do is get rid of the fractions, by multiplying both sides by (y+4)(2y+3):
(x+1)(2y+3) = (x+2)(y+4)
Then I'm going to multiply out those brackets:
2xy + 2y + 3x + 3 = xy + 2y + 4x + 8
Then I'm going to take all the terms with x to the left side of the equation and all the terms without x to the right side of the equation
To do that, any term with an x in it gets deducted from the right side, (and from the left side as well of course to keep the equation balanced):
2xy - xy +2y +3x - 4x + 3 = xy - xy +2y +4x - 4x + 8
Tidied up:
xy + 2y - x + 3 = 2y + 8
And any term without an x in it gets deducted from the left side (and from the right side too, of course)
xy + 2y - 2y -x + 3 - 3 = 2y + 8 -2y -3
Tidy that up a bit and we end up with:
xy - x = 5
factorise the left hand side x(y-1) = 5
divide both sides by (y-1)
x = 5/(y-1)
phew, sorted!

Well at the moment we're preparing for a drill competition against the other members of the Wing. But in general, flying and gliding, adventure training, helping with local events etc.
I am the drill commander for the squad so I need to learn the sequence really. But I can't practice unless I have some cadets....

Sounds fun - I remember trying to keep the members of my school marching band under control - not an easy task as they can't keep the lines straight! *aaargh*

Cushions...now that is a good idea...though I'd be tempted to lie down on them in the end...!

You could pull a prank I saw a few years ago: put some catwalk music on, and do a voiceover whilst your squad come out one by one brandishing different types of drill. Pneumatic, large masonary, cordless hammer, ....

Keeping dressings is very difficult, especially in open order. But I suppose it's easier without instruments!

No, but I chose 6 cushions deliberately - it's a typical SATB choir, and there are as many altos as the rest added together....
