Hang on a sec and I'll find a link for a live distro for you!
Edit:
http://www.musix.org.ar/en/download.htmlThis ones a musically based Live CD- you need to burn it onto a CD then reboot your computer. It is a bit unstable so I'll try and find Mandrive 2006 which I know is good.
Edit2:
http://www.mandriva.com/en/download/mandrivaoneTheres a bunch of mirrors to choose from for a mandriva download! If you have bit torrent then you can download it that way too.

The whole point of Linux is that it's free

.
If you want to boot it and try it out, have a look at Knoppix - a bootable Linux CD image. It runs all off the CD, so you don't need to install it:
http://www.knoppix.org/Download the CD image, burn it to disc, and boot

Helloooo Katy

What have you been doing today?
I went into RGS (my new school

) for a 'Shakespeare Day' which was basically to make sure everyone starting Eng Lit this term is on the same level. We got more done in 5 hours today than we did in most of Year 9, studying Macbeth for the SATs

Anyway after that I popped into town for some stationery (3 for 2 in WhSmiths! And it's so pretty....) and, erm, clothes (again). And a new bag.
I can't go on random shopping sprees now the holidays are over! That was my last one!

Sep 4 2006, 07:16 PM
Ooooh, yay WH Smiths stationery shopping

What does your new bag look like?
I can never go shopping - have band on Saturdays!

It's brown, and it's got strappy things on the front, and pockets on the side... and inside the lining is leopard print, which is a bit random but it actually looks really good
I don't really have the money to do much more shopping anyway, so it's a good thing school's going to take up most of my time! I need a job....

So when all this is done I can boot it? And then what happens...does my computer get munched in any way, shape or form?
Rosemary7391
Sep 4 2006, 07:30 PM
Nope. Soon as you take the CD out you'll be able to boot up windows as normal, unless of course you deliberatly mount the windows section and deliberatly cause havoc.... Not that I've done that...
YetAnotherPianist
Sep 4 2006, 07:30 PM
It won't touch your hard drive or affect your computer at all: it's self-contained, boots off the CD, and runs all the software off the CD. If you want to save anything, you'll have to save it on the Internet or onto a USB key or something.

Floppy disks are quite useful for that kind of thing. Makes a good temporary hard drive. Just remember teh floppy drive isn't A:\ anymore, its /mnt/floppy

Ahh, must be Windows 9x machines, or NT/2000/XP machines with FAT32 partitions? Linux still can't write to NTFS

.
Didn't fancy doing 'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1' then?

Yes, but you have to reboot each time.
Trebor, the reason your school computers don't have CD drives is probably because a lot of idiots manage to spend an entire lesson watching them open and close. Until they get bored and break them.

My Hard Disk is NTFS - will this affect it?
Rosemary7391
Sep 4 2006, 07:39 PM
Nope. It won't even touch the hard drive.
YAP, if I knew what dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 did, I might have done. And the restrictions meant I couldn't even use ctrl+alt+del unless I was VERY fast.

No. It will mean Linux won't be able to save stuff to your hard drive; which is what you wanted anyway

.

dd is bit like cp but strange. It has its uses though:
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=imagefile bs=1024 count=1440
will copy a floppy disk to an imagefile: bs is short for block size (1024 = 1kb), 1440 tells it how many blocks to copy (1440 for a 1.44Mb disk).
