I was 11 when I started to play the oboe and 13 when I started playing the cello. I also play 3 recorders (descant, treble and tenor) but I can't really remember how long I have been playing them for...............probably about 7 years for descant and 5 for treble and tenor, or somthing like that.

i started piano when i was 9 i think, but gave up after 1 year and then took it up again with guitar(for fun really, and can play well in chords because of my big hands) when i was in my late 14. then i took up the flute(8 months ago) and clarinet(4 months ago) when i was 16 and now i am 17 and just took up organ(my friend teaches me) for fun and recorder seriously

I put 6-9 because I started piano when I was six. Then I started when I was flute literally just before I was nine, and guitar when I was thirteen because I got it for my birthday.

I was six when i started piano and seven when i started violin. Piano is such a useful beginning instrument (well i think so anyway!!!) i mean violin at the beginning sounds like a strangled cat (my poor parents had to go through listening to me AND my little brother starting out as young violinists)

Piano and Violin aged 2. Took Grade 8 violin aged 10, then went to boarding school and didn't like the violin teacher, so quit!
Recorder aged 10 (only way to get out of group recorder lessons was to take individual lessons).
Oboe and guitar aged 12.
Now I only really keep up the piano.

Wow...2 years old. Min Lee, a Singaporean violinist, received a tiny violin for her 2nd birthday and she started playing. Now, she's a professional violinist. Oh well...
For me, I started piano at 5. My parents originally wanted me to learn the organ because my cousins were learning. However, I was too tiny for the organ. My feet couldn't reach the pedals so the guy at the school asked my parents if they wanted to sign me up for piano classes instead. I could switch later if I wanted. I stopped piano at 11 because I felt I was playing without direction. Now at 18, I'm playing it again...much better. I found out it helps to listen to the tune (a recording of it or even a MIDI) before playing it. You learn so much faster! I stopped at Grade 3 Piano.
I picked up violin at 13. Then stopped. (So fickle

) Then picked it up again. As I was a beginner when I stopped, I have a violin teacher now. For piano, I play by myself. I'm currently learning Chopin's Nocturne Op.9 #2 and it's coming on well, though I still hate pieces with many flats or sharps.

I was 13 when I started both the clarinet and the piano. They were my first instruments!
I didn't do that great on the clarinet, gave up at grade 6 when I was 17 but I got my grade 8 for piano when I was 17. I took up organ when I was 15 and play all the time in church and for weddings etc!
I don't think theres any set age for starting an instrument but it's certainly easier to pick it up the older you are, but in saying that my friends all thought that 13 was a bit late to start piano and that I wouldn't do very well but I proved them wrong!

I started playing the piano when I was 5. Then I took up the cello when I was 8, oboe when I was 11 and saxophone and trumpet when I was 12.
I think the age that you start at depends on the teacher and the technique that you're taught with. I know that the Yamaha technique is very good for children as it focuses on aural.
(I know this is off topic, but could anyone tell me how to get rid of that 'warn' thing beside my username?)

I don't think there's a set age for learning an instrument, but that's only my opinion! It's best to start young though, but on the other hand, if you've been doing something from a young age, when you're older you're more likely to give it up and want to try something else....
I was 11 when my dad said he'd start me on the piano (I had started violin but it wasn't for me!!), but only started proper lessons with a teacher when I was 15.

I started when I was 12. I wish I could've started earlier, but before then my parents wouldn't have been able to afford the lessons nor the piano. When I have kids, I would probably encourage them to learn something from a younger age than I did.
