Hello,
I am taking grade 7 in a couple of weeks, but am stuck on a question for strings.

The question is to rewrite the violin part as it should be played in a certain bar.
The time signature is 3/4 and the notes are written as a D dotted semiquaver, then an E dotted semiquaver beamed together. However, the semi-quavers are white! Something to do with alternating the notes qucikly, but I don't know how to work the rhythms out.
Please can anyone help?

THanks, it also seays 'How many times would the musician play each note'?
Haven't got a clue! Any ideas!

As they're dotted I reckon it is 3 semi-quavers of each note alternating. I have not done Grade 7, but do play violin in an orchestra and we see these things quite a lot. Its just a shorthand instead of writing out all the semi-quavers.

You could see if the note values add up to full bar if it is in context.

I think you mean "tremolo"s.....

No these notes are measured. Tremolos tend to be played as many as you can in the time available ie they are not counted.

I would have thought you played alternating dotted semiquavers, as without the dot one would play alternating semiquavers. A bar of 3/4 contains 8 dotted semiquavers so each note should occur 4 times. Not the sort of rhythm I would enjoy playing!

You could well be right. I'm still working up to Grade 5 so don't really know about grade 7.
