My grandad just rang me up, and wanted to know who plays the song "On The Shore". Apparently it is a flute song, but I have never heard it.
Any ideas would be welcomed, and thanked

I hadn't heard of it, or the tune when he whistled it to me.
Apparently, the person was a communist or something who was thrown out of America and came to UK - any ideas?

Same here. It was Acker Bilk's signature tune.

Yes - Acker Bilk and his Paramount Jazz Band. He was a leading jazz clarinetist in the mid-20th century. I went to a live concert of his about two years ago and he played this tune then. I am sure you ought to be able to get hold of a copy of the music and probably a recording too. It was a "classic" in its time and it's been used for adverts and goodness only knows what else since then.
I guess I'm showing my age by admitting to knowing it but hey, who cares?!!

I actually have to confess to having an Acker Bilk cd with Stranger on the shore, Cavatina, Pachelbel's Canon & other tracks on it.

Well what do you know? Just after I sent my first reply to this thread up pops the music on TV backing a "Whiskas" cat food ad?
Small world.......

Oh how odd - I'm a Laura who plays clarinet too and as soon as I started learning my Dad presented me with a copy of Stanger on the Shore. I'm doing an MA at the moment and for it we had to do reviews of other clarinettists so I went to see Acker Bilk playing it live at the theatre near me! (Also by weird coincidence a friend of mine used to know him but I didnt find that out til after I handed in my review!)
