Do you think it is a bit of a jump to go from grade 4 tenor horn to grade 7?

It depends whether you're good enough to take Grade 7! If you are, then no.

I can't give you any tenor horn specific advice but I can offer some instrument-independent advice. Essentially it depends on a number of factors:

1) How well did you do in Grade 4? If you got very high marks that narrows the jump; if you got very low marks I would say it's a massive jump.

2) How well do you want to do in Grade 7? If you want to do really well (even if you have been doing well in the early grades) you'll need to spend a lot of time practising before you do it and build on experience;

3) How long have you been playing since you did grade 4? If it's a long time and you have a lot more experience then probably you've already made the 'jump' (although still at a walking pace, to continue the metaphor) in your intermediary playing.

It's also worth noting that for all instruments grades 6-8 are marked on a completely different scale to grades 1-5 (at least the pieces are) what they're looking for is more musicality in the later grades; this is something that takes time to develop.

Hope that helps.

It all depends on what type of a musician you are if you are prepared to put the work in and pass grade 5 theory the go for it, it will be tough enogh though!

I think it is a big jump, but if you and your teacher both think you can do it, go for it. Reach for the stars! Good luck. smile.gif

It depends how many months / years are in between doesn't it?!
