just wondering
ItsAllGoodAndSmiley
I haven't done my diploma yet, but I think it would be very distracting to have a page turner, because you would constantly be thinking "what if they don't turn it in time" or "what if they accidently turn two pages at once". I would definitely rather not have that adding to the pressure of the performance.

I know you'd be worrying but surely that is what they are paid for!- to turn at correct times etc!

And surely you could have a few rehearsals beforehand, so the page turner knows what to expect? You need to be able to trust your page turner!

Page turning rules!

The few occasions where I've played anything requiring a page turner, I've found that the benefits far outweigh the worries about them forgetting to turn. If you aren't fumbling around trying to turn pages you can concentrate on playing all of the notes.

Scariest piece I've ever page-turned for was by Webern - there was no melody to follow, so I was counting like crazy! Oh, and the local amateur production of Carmen where they cut the role of Micaela ohmy.gif .

How on earth do you have a performance of Carmen without Micaela?

I can't see that managing a page-turner is any more of a challenge for a pianist than managing an accompanist is for the rest of us mortals.

You're in charge, you agree with them what you expect of them and then you practise together to make sure it works. And then you trust them to get on with it.

I did the Dip without a page turner but then conned my little brother into turning for LRSM. Makes a big difference -- especially for organ exams. All those pesky Barenreiter Urtext Buxtehude and Bach editions printed in landscape mode.. difficult to keep under control on the music desk with one hand.. cool.gif

By having pages and pages of score stuck together with pink tape!

A rehearsal complete with page turner is a good thing, especially if you have made a few cuts, e.g. in tutti sections of a concerto movement.

Landscape vs Portrait - seems the publishers can't decide which is better.

My teacher's encouraging playing from memory unsure.gif. A bit of a mammoth task really. Has anyone else experience of this? I have to say I'm relieved to read that there are people out there that use the music - thank goodness! I know the rules say you can use the music but that doesn't necessary mean that everyone does. At least I know that this is an option that people really do opt for.
