Yes, there are jazz guitarists.

If you want to play solo it isn't too easy! You have to navigate some horrible chords/positions. What guitar have you got? If you have to buy one and you're thinking of jazz, ask for one with a jazz scale length, the scale is the distance between the nut and the bridge and a shorter scale is liked for jazz (to make the stretches less painful). If you have big hands, no problem.

Jazz guitar is quite difficult, you need to really know your chord chemistry, 3 chord rock sequences just is not going to cut it esp if you intend to play in a big band. Whilst their is no strict rules on this, traditionally jazz guitar is played on an 'Arch Top' deep bodied guitar like the Gibson L5 CES or ES175, however i've played in big bands where the guitarist favoured a stratacastor due to less feedback problems. Personally i like Maccaferri's, but each to his own.
