I am trying to decide whether to do the ear tests or aural awareness!
Grade 6:
Ear Tests:

1. The examiner will play twice a 2 part melody in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8 or 9/8 time. The candidate must tap or clap the rhythm of the upper line and identify the metre as 2, 3, or 4 time and simple or compund. (hmmmmm do able with practice)

2. The examiner will sound the tonic chord and play once the completed passage. The candidate must sing back the upper part to the examiner and say whether the passage is ina major or minor key. (ARGH!!!!!!!!!)

3. The examiner will sound the tonic chord and play once more a fully harmonised version of the melody. The candidate must identify the cadence as perfect, plagal, imperfect or interrupted. (Again, do able with practice).

4. The candidate must comment on the dynamics, tonal graduation, articulation and texture of the passage. (At last, the type of question that I can do! So, fairly easy)

5. The examiner will name they key, within the limit of 5 sharps or 5 flats and sound the key note. The candidate must sing the 3 notes of the chord 1a, 1b, IVa, or Va from bottom to top (as requested) and name then. (WHAT ON EARTH??!!)

Aural Awareness:

1. The examiner will play twice a melodic figure of not more than 2 bars.
2. The candidate will say whether the extract is in a major or minor key
3. The examiner will indicate the key and name the starting note and the candidate will play the extract twice more.
4. The candidate willl play back the extract and continue by completing a section.

The candidate will add 6 more bars to make a total of 8 bars (eep!)

My teacher has never entered anyone for trinity before, which one should I take?

I don't have many students who take Trinity exams, but those who do choose the aural awareness. Its easier to make up and continue a melody than do some of the ear tests.
What instrument are you taking grade 6 in?

It may help to try out some exercises from the Trinity "Specimen ear tests" book with CD - I assume they do the later grades (I have Book Two which covers grades 2 & 3).

...but only if you're considering this option seriously.

I've noticed that these tests are harder than ABRSM ones of the same grade, I think.
