I think I may be beginning to realise why many of the people from Hong Kong I've spoken to on this forum are so concerned about what diplomas their teachers have.  In this country it's reasonably common to have a teacher who only actually has as their last qualification grade 8 but has several years of experience since then and could actually pass a diploma if they wanted to; but they don't need it as they're already set up.  :

Yeah I know...many music teachers in HK only have passed grade8, I think it's because of the fact that so many of students in HK want to learn music and there's not enough teachers who actuall have the diploma qualifications...

It seems in Hong Kong that grade 8 represents now about three years of playing experience generally:

No, you are just one of the many people who have done it: it seems that it's the general case that many people do grade 8 in three years! I was suggesting that grade 8 to someone in Hong Kong might mean something different to someone here: in Hong Kong it's something that is necessary and should be passed quickly; here it's something that one should work towards over many years thus the final results (not literally exam results but the pianist that comes out of it) will be different.
