Full Version: What Piece?

crazy cow
ok, i've just found out that i have an audition on wednesday (ie. 2 days!!) for a music festival at school, and then have just realised that i don't have an accompanist for it (oopsy!)
so the choice is, i either play reflection (faure) which was what i was originally planning on, but without the piano (i think it's about grade 6ish, not really sure!)
or i play syrinx (debussy) being as though i don't need a pianist for that! (grade 7/8ish?)
im not worried about getting in or anything (i don't really want to! tongue.gif ) but i'm doing the audition for experience and to try and improve my confidence
any ideas on what i should play?

any advice is welcome!! tongue.gif

sorry, i've noticed that quite a few people have viewed this and no-one has left any advice!
so whoever you are, whether you play flute or not (or even if you play an instrument or not!) if you have any ideas i would be really grateful!
i've got to talk to my teacher about it, but i've never done anything like this before so i don't know which piece will benifit me the most!

but if it helps... i like syrinx better, but its harder! i don't know whether pushing myself further might be a good or bad idea - if i can pull it off then it will help my confidence loads, but if i mess it up i don't know whether it will matter or not being as though its a bit above my 'standard' tongue.gif

has anyone done any auditions before? (guessing yes!)
what did you do - ie pieces closer to your standard, easier or harder? and how did it help your confidence?
sorry, i just really want to do this because i get really nervous playing in front of people, so i need the experience!

play the one you are good at...
crazy cow
hmm, i don't really know which one that is!
i think it mainly depends on how nervous i get!! tongue.gif
i dont know. reflection is easier, but i'd feel wierd playing it without a piano
so i dont know what to do!
decisions, decisions....
it's not even like it's a big thing anyway!
oh well...

thanks for the advice though!

If you get really nervous play the one that is most straightforward for you - the one you can play well even if your hands are shaking..

hmm, thanks for the advice!
i'm having a last night of cramming both of them, i suppose i will just see what happens tomorrow! i'll speak to me flute teacher and see what she says, and then decide what mood im in or something like that! tongue.gif

Play the one that shows off your talents the most, if your unaccompanied one sounds amazing then go for it!! Grades don't matter in auditions, an auditioner would rather hear a good lower grade piece than a poorly played higher grade piece. Is this for flute?

I agree with Nicki- choose a piece you feel comfortable with and can play accurately and musically rather than one which is outside your technical capabilities which you may make a lot of mistakes in. Good luck with your choice and with the festival! smile.gif

yeah its for flute! it went ok i think! actually one of my music teachers sight-read the piano accomp for it (aww!!!) so i did reflection! i stopped once cos i messed it up, but other than that i think it went ok-ish! and i think its helped me confidence as well which is brill cos thats why i entered it in the first place!
thanks everyone for all the advice!
