Hi,

Do you mean how you go about studying music at university?

Well, make sure you take A-Level music after your GCSEs and keep up your instrumental playing (which sounds like it's going well) as most university music departments require at least Grade 5 (preferably Grade 8) in your instrument.

All the best

don't think there's another way....they (uni) normally ask for A in A-level music..... that's why i really need an A for my AS...

Actually, I think it would be a good idea to contact the university music departments (or whoever appropriate) to check out exactly what the prerequisites are. Even if you don't meet the grades, it is really worth while contacting universities to see if they will still accept you. My university stated initially that I needed a B in music. However, when I found out I got a C, I contacted the university to see if they would still accept me, and they did!

I think it would probably depend on the university where you intend to study as to which exact grades you need.

Hang on a minute. You've got grade 5 trombone and you're only predicted an E for GCSE music? That doesn't add up at all. Is English not your mother tongue, perhaps?

You're only year 10 though. You've still got another year haven't you to get your grade up. We only had a teacher for one year out of two for music. I'm sure that with grade 5 trumpet already, you will be an ideal person for A-level music. I don't know about at your school, but I think you would need a C at mine to continue to AS level from GCSE, and they would probably take someone with a D, if they were enthusiastic enough, particularly if they were already of that standard on an instrument.

I'm currently in year 11 and just did my music exam. I'm also a grade 8 pianist. About a year ago, I was getting D grades in the listening exam. Before my GCSE, we did another practice and I got a B. The standard at GCSE is equalivant to grade 5. U're grade 5, so on da performance side, u should be doing fine. U have time to improve your listening and should get at least a C no problem. Wat exam board are u doing?

I studied music at Southampton. But there were lots of others at the time I applied that required Bs, Cs, and Ds in A-Level music - you just have to look around and do some research. Try looking through some prospectuses or online.

I didn't even do GCSE music! So it really does all depend on the individual person.
