the tempo should be indicated in the sonata....i mean whether it's allegro...etc... you don't have to find the exact metronome marking...

I always felt this should not be taken too fast. Minum=80 sounds quite reasonable.

I am starting to learn it (Grade 2/3), but only separate hands at the moment (quite a long piece in my view).

My AB edition of Beethoven Sonatas has a commentary by Donald Tovey...an acknowledged expert on Beethoven's works. This copy doesn't give a metronome marking but he indicates that the Alla Breve time signature should give a 2 in a bar feel. He says".......young players may learn from the Alla Breve marking that a too easy march at four in the bar is dull......"
He also stresses the ma non troppo!!!
Have fun playing it!!!

In other words, it's the longest piece I've started to learn so far!

I have found a version of this on the Radio 3 website - here is the link
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/classical/pizarro/sonata19.shtmlI have just started learning this piece - it's great for intermediate players - sounds really nice but relatively easy to play.
PS - all of Beethoven's piano sonata's can be found on the site - enjoy!
