Any pianist in the world,
i'd ask u,
have u played with orchestra, which orchestra?
what did u play?
what did u feel playing with orchestra?
any tips to play well with orchestra?
what i mean is how many times have u played? (just the concert not inc the reherseal)
what i mean for the orchestra is either big orchestra or not, but not a band.
it can be world class concert or youth or what ever. just reply the message to make sure about any other things.

Hi,

I don't understand the poll too much. Are you asking "how many times" altogether? How many concerts given? How many different concerts (with different orchestras?)?

If you count everything inc rehearsal, it'll come to more than 10 if you've done it at all. If you're world class now there had to be a time at conservatoire or wherever you started and needed rehearsal.

Did you mean any kind of playing? Like filling in parts with a young amateur orchestra, continuo or just the concert stage? Just famous orchestras or will the local 'band' do? If you can clarify I'll vote!

As to how it is, it's up to the conductor unless you're doing that job too. The conductor can make a mess of things if not taking the soloist's lead.

I recently played the 1st movement of this wonderful Concerto. I didn't have a real orchestra to play along with though, just my own midi backing. You can hear my efforts Here

P.S. the page is quite often temporarily offline due to bandwith limits on Free accounts so if this happens try again later on.

I played Beethoven 3 with the college orchestra in my 2nd year at university, but you can also get orchestral backing CDs to play along to and I've done a couple like that in the privacy of my own home - it's a wonderful feeling!!! (Except when you're doing a cadenza and misjudge how long you've got before the CD gets on with the next bit! Very frustrating then ! mad.gif

I have listened to your playing. What can I say?

Wonderful. I enjoyed every second of it. This is a young players's concerto, if ever I heard one and you are clearly a young performer enjoying every second of it.

I hope you can persuade an orchestra to play it with you. Let us know if you can; I, for one, will try to be in the audience if you can.

Thank you so much for your enthusiastic comments Steve. They are much appreciated as the Concerto was a lot of effort, not only learning the soloist part but also doing the orchestral backing from the Piano part was a real labour of love too. Gershwin wrote the Concerto when he was 25 I believe but sadly its been quite a few years since I was that age. I don't suppose 38-39, when I did the performance/recording of this, can be considered young can it? biggrin.gif
I did the 2nd movement about 6 years ago, didn't record it sadly, but I do still have the orchestral backing. All I have to do is the final movement and I'll have the whole Concerto. Maybe one day, I'll get around to it!

Once again, many thanks

Computing power roughly doubles in strength and halves in price every 18 months or so. I bet modern editions of Sibelious or Cubase have the facility to scan an entire orchestral score; you could then strip out the piano part and have the synthesized orchestral parts in a fraction of the time it took 6 years ago. I don't know for certain that this can be done, but I bet someone on these forums does.

The all you've got to do is learn the piano part to the 3rd movement. biggrin.gif

Do you put your recording of the first movement onto a cd and give it to the parents of new pupils? I do that with my promo cd; it establishes straight away that I speak with authority when I am teaching and considerably lowers incidents of pushy parents questioning my judgement. laugh.gif

I voted for never because I haven't been learning piano for long and it is a bit too early to be thinking about playing piano with an orchestra!

Thank you Nicki_flute. The Concerto is a wonderful concerto. There are a few inconsistenies in my performance though but overall I am pretty pleased with it considering I was the Soloist, Orchestra and Conductor!! biggrin.gif

I actually played this to a few pupils/parents when I was at my peak with it. I put the backing onto a CD to play along to. It was quite funny as some of the pianos were exactly a semitone/tone down in pitch and so I did 3 or 4 backings in different keys on the CD. It was so difficult playing the movement when the piano was off pitch because the sound coming from the keys of course, was slightly different to what I'd practiced and was almost enought to throw me off....not quite though. I also did a recording of the whole piece and put it on the same CD that I made of my pupil's performances, compositions etc which I do from time to time.
