This is mainly for clarinetists. As you know I am chossing a programme for the clarinet dipABRSM. My main concern is balance and style. I have come up with

Weber - Grand Duo (mov. 1 + 2)
Berekey - Three Pieces
Stanford - Three Intermezzi
Messager - Solo de Concours

Need to check timings though. May be too long with pauses between, and the longer 5 minute pause wind players are allowed.

Any thoughts or suggestions welcome?

It's surprising that 44 people have read this but no-one has answered.

Well is Berkeley modern ish? He is isn't he?!

I'd say you have a good programme....but I don't know much!

Yes he is modernish. Obviously Mozart would have balanced it even better but since he only did a concert and quintet (as good as they both are!), I just prefer playing clarinet and piano pieces with the piano, not orchestral transcriptions. Weber Grand Duo IS for piano, so that should work.

Good pieces, and some nice contrasts. Early Romanticism, something slightly modern (Nat, Lennox Berkeley wrote his Three Pieces in 1939), Victoriana and a total opportunity to show off!

Definitely check your timings, as I think they're quite severe if you play for too long.

I appreciate your reasons for not doing a concerto movement, but consider it anyway, to prove that you are a fully-rounded player, capable of meeting the demands of unaccompanied, piano-accompanied and orchestra-accompanied pieces. I understand that they ask questions about the choice of programme in the Viva, so be prepared for "why no concerto movement?". It would also give an even greater contrast of genre.
