'Other' - piano
leasalonga
I'd like to learn the oboe... it has a really gorgeous sound all the time it seems... or maybe I never heard a bad oboeist.... But sometimes on the flute it can sound kind of 'airy' and the sound isn't as full kind of... I just like the sound of Oboe... I'm not going to get one though sad.gif I don't think my parents will understand if I start another instrument straight after taking up the harp... I'm still in love with harp though! biggrin.gif

I'd like to play the harpsichord (subject code 41)
Ursie
I had to vote 'other' as my choice wasn't there - the huge organ with all its pipes, manuals stops etc. How wonderful it must be to get the opportunity to play on one of these.
Nicola

MBC_Tiger
I'd love to play the harp like my teacher who is a good friend of mine also.her harp rules!i play piano, flute, guitar and sing right now. smile.gif

It's funny itsn't it. As a child everyone said I would make a good pianist because I have long fingers! laugh.gif But I learned to play the recorder (descant, treble and tenor), then the flute, then the oboe, and now I am having singing lessons.

But I'd still really love to play the piano.

One day...
LittleAnna
I know this isn't a very relevant question but how much are harps leasalonga? Or anyone else who knows?
Thanks

You all make me feel quite the odd one out. Talking about the beautiful sound of the oboe etc, I agree, but still, I've always wanted to play the drums simply so I could make a huge racket etc etc!

Maybe it's to do with being a flautist, you can't get really loud on a flute, or if you can, please let me know how!
leasalonga
Little Anna: I'm very new to harps so please correct me if I'm wrong andyone. They are rather expensive instruments. I'm renting one at the moment. It's worth around £7000 pounds but it's not even a full sized one and the strings are always breaking so obv. you have to keep forking out for new ones. The one I'm renting is a pilgrim harps which I believe is quite a good type. I've hears a full sized concert harp can cost up to £52,000 pounds but I don't think I'll be getting one of those. Anyway, I hope I've answered your question just ask if you want to know anything else. biggrin.gif

I'm astonished at the number of people who seem to like the sound of the Oboe. I think it sounds like a duck.

I have to agree with you David, not keen on the oboe myself! However, the bassoon is a fabulous instrument...wouldn't mind having a go at that rolleyes.gif

Ducks sound good! lol
LittleAnna
Woweee - up to £52000!!!!! Just think what you could buy with that..........

Thanks for letting me know anyway

I would really like to play the bassoon. Apart from its mellow sound, it's a beautiful looking instrument!
Lisa B
I have to agree with Davids comment - oboes do sound like ducks! biggrin.gif

I have to agree with David - I'm in shock as to how many people like the oboe. David, I'm with you on this one....... it sounds like a duck!

I would have loved to play the oboe, cello or harp! They all have such beautiful sounds. Apparently the oboe is one of the hardest instruments to play. Oboe players, is this true? huh.gif When I was in year 3 i wanted to play the cello but my teacher said that you needed big hands! Cello players, is this true? huh.gif

ping-lee!!! biggrin.gif

I know some who plays oboe very well... and it stills sounds like a duck.

The instrument i have always wanted to play is a bassoon. It sounds great and looks totally different.
missmusic
Recently ive been thinking about playing the saxophone...its has a great sound and its not so different from the clarinet.

Hi Ping-lee,
I am 11 years old, and I play the piano and cello.
The cello is a very beautiful instrument, and it makes a very nice sound when played well. I have quite small hands, and it is very easy to play the cello. My teacher says I am one of the "better" students, so I assume that I am doing everything right! You don't necessarily need to have "big" hands, you could play it just as well with small hands. As a celloist, I have to say that it really doesn't matter what size your hands are, my piano teacher starts celloists going at age 5! Just tell your teacher (if you really want to play the cello) that you are really motivated to play the cello and that you don't really think that the size of your hands matters.
Good luck to you Ping-lee,

Yes, it is possible to get a load sound out of a flute. If you find a quite high note and put plenty of air behind it the result is spectacular. a D with two ledger lines is a good one.

The cello when played really well sounds beautiful. I'd love to play it. I'm a woodwind person myself though. Helen x smile.gif

LOL that is exactly what we said at secondary school! Though I used to play the oboe.. it wasnt that bad. Bad teacher put me off and I eventually quit. Wish I didnt. Ah well. I'd love to play bassoon. Didnt have the money for one though so I went with oboe instead lol

I know this from a while ago but I just thought I would reply anyway! sorry.

Hi ping-lee! I play the oboe and the cello! biggrin.gif Everyone says the oboe is one of the hardest instruments to play but I never found that. That was probably because it was the first instrument apart from recorders that I played. It is quite hard work to begin with and you get out of breath quickly but it gets easier after a while.

You don't need particuarly big hands to play the cello, I have little hands and I do but it might be a bit easier. I don't really know unsure.gif

Andromeda_Aiken
I suppose it has something to do with the size of the instrument. When you say the word cello, people automatically conjure up an image of a full size cello with a orcheatra cello-ist (is that what you call a cello player? Correct me, someone. It's 2am and my brain isn't functioning well biggrin.gif ) Cuz I mean, if you've small hands, you could always use a smaller sized cello. Loads of people want to learn the cello! I know one friend who does but she can't because cellos are expensive, she doesn't have enough time and her house has no space for one.

I always wanted to learn flute. It's so sweet sounding. I play the piano and violin. Violin is so darn hard to learn in the beginning and I'm still in the beginning. Hopefully it wears off. It still makes me ticked off now when my stickers get non sticky and start running all over the fingerboard. Irritates me to death. I can't play flutes and many wind instruments for some reason (except recorder). I think I don't have enough breath or something. When I blew downwards into the hole in the flute(dunno what you call it) in secondary school...there was no sound! biggrin.gif At a Chinese exhibition at a shopping mall, I tried blowing into one of the instruments...there's like a gourd in the middle of it, the sound was weird. I produced a low note. My dad blew into it and out came a high note. The guy in charge of the booth started playing for me, and it was all high notes! ohmy.gif

And I agree with hellokitty that the flute's much easier to carry around! Pianos can't be carried around laugh.gif , they've gotta be truck-transported heeh.

Id love to learn how to play the guitar. When i was younger,i couldn't bend my wrist round to reach the strings.I play the next best thing if not better-the piano and keyboard. My Clavinova has about 30 guitar sounds on it !
Lixandreth
If I was going to choose a new instrument, double bass. happy.gif I really like them.

Ultimately, I'd just like to be able to play piano better.
