Full Version: Why Not Print Exam Pieces For Trumpet

It is really hard to get music for Trumpet exam pieces like Piano and Violin. It would be better if the authorities come forward to print Trumpet Exam pieces for different grades like Piano. It would be great help for those who do exam.

Great idea and I think the flute players, clarinet players, saxophone players, oboists, cellists etc would all like books like piano and violin.

Unfortunately there aren't enough people taking these exams to warrant the cost of producing books for each instrument. There are many piano and violin exams worldwide but not sufficient of anything else - although I guess it must be quite a close call on flute and clarinet these days.

I think most of us will find we have to stick with many books for one exam sad.gif

I do wonder though, how Trinity (who are smaller, aren't they?) are able to publish separate books for recorder etc? It would seem that, especially for the most popular instruments, it would be a worthwhile venture. Though I do rather like the fact that those instruments without the exam books tend to have more variety in our exam pieces choices, whereas an awful lot of piano and fiddle teachers stick with the printed pieces - understandably, but it's kind of cool that we don't have that excuse, and don't look on certain pieces as "alternatives" but at all of them as the same... if that makes any sense blink.gif ('mtired...)

That's very true. I'm a pianist and my piano teacher gets my music for me and when it doesn't come attached to a book it looks kinda foreign or too hard or too easy as all I have to compare them to is the exam book and the other alternatives whereas getting it as a book means that you get a feel of the style as well.

I think they could definitely think about flute and clarinet books given the number who take those exams. Then again perhaps one reason so many do piano and violin exams is their music is so easy to find and cost effective, so similar could happen with other instruments.

I'd definitely be interested in the board's take on it.

But Trinity are losing money, and have joined up with Guildhall to form one exam board. Possibly because they can't afford to exist separately?

Fair point!

so where do you guys find books for doing exams? are they published by ABRSM as well?
snuglivixen
If you look on the ABRSM home page there's a link to the list of music for each instrument. It tells you which books the pieces are in. They are published by many different company's. I looked at grade 1 flute a worked out if I want to study for it I'll need at least 5 books. This may be a problem for those on a limited budget. However, I love variety in what I play so I got the books for alternate material.

true - one of the problems i had was the copland - fanfare for a common man- this is one peice in a book - which needs to be bought - and then for the piano accompaniment you need to pay around and extra £9 - this is alot of money to pay for one peice! - then there are even more books that need buying - this is alot to pay out for 3 peices + considering the cost of the exam fee as well
