I noticed today that my piano teacher has an LGSM. I've done some researching and as far as I can tell this is a teaching diploma from Guildhall but for Speech and Voice instructors. My teacher is a pianist as her first study but I was just wondering if there was another diploma with the same acronym. I don't feel quite comfortable to ask her what grades she has etc. because she might think I was being nosey!

Thanks

LGSM was a perfectly respectable diploma on a par with LTCL or LLCM. Guildhall have simply scrapped their music exam system now - it has been taken over by Trinity. There are a few Guildhall qualifications still running which seem, for some reason, to be called LGSMD now, but when I did mine in 1993 it was just LGSM (at least, I'm pretty sure that's what's on my diploma)

I don't know whether Guildhall itself still exists as a music conservatoire?

I hope so. One of my students is going there in the Autumn to study bassoon. wink.gif

Ah!

So I wonder why they scrapped the exams?? It's pity, I really liked their exams. It was so nice not getting endless inane comments about lack of dynamics!

The Guildhall exams still exist, although they will eventually merge with the Trinity exams. If you go on to the Trinity website you can link to the Guildhall syllabus.
