Full Version: Jazz - Pupils Taking It Further?

Has anybody here who's taught any jazz (using the AB system) heard that any of their pupils have taken their jazz any further? Like playing with other musicians, or attending local jazz workshops, or even joining a band?

Hi Violina, i make a point from quite early on with my students to look out for other kids or friends they may have who play music and try and get involved. For example a 14 year old girl student plays some basic sax with her friends who play 'Ska' in a guitar band. Its largely about keeping it fun and not grade orientated.

Thanks Tenorclef - and interesting that yours has been the only response so far. Could this imply that not much is happening jazzwise for AB syllabus jazz pupils in the UK?

Hint to teachers of the jazz syllabus - we should be getting our pupils out there playing with other musicians! This will take imagination and perhaps even some persistance on our part but will be well worth it if this whole jazz syllabus idea is going to lead to anything more significant than pupils learning to play jazz just purely their own enjoyment.

Nothing wrong with that, you could say, but in the end music needs to be taken out of the house and played live to appreciative audiences.

Comments, anyone?

No comments. I hope this doesn't speak volumes.
