Firstly, for GCSE performance piece, I am going to play faure Sicilienne (grade 5 syllabus in the hope to play for grade 5). I can play it all the way through with piano but i am finding it hard to put the dynamics into it. Bar 26 is the worst + similar like it.

High notes- still dreadful when slurred...is there any useful exercises which would help with this??

Thanks for any help

I love the piece as well. I chose to play it when I heard the music off the grade 5 CD, then , I borrowed the a friend. (should have given it back 2 weeks back) ph34r.gif ph34r.gif

I played this & am trying to think of something helpful to say!!
Practise the high notes on their own as small groups. remember you need lots of diaphragmatic support for the high notes. You also need to keep up the air speed for the quiet notes - if you drop the air speed the note will split. For the loud notes imagine you're pushing the air through the flute... Good luck

I love this piece too, but I played it on the viola so I can't give you any help I'm afraid! Good luck with it though. It's on the grade 6 syllabus for viola.

The exercises in Trevor Wye's practice books are good for the high notes. I played this piece for my grade 5 exam, and the problem with the high notes is made worse by the fact that you know that a high entry is coming up on the first line of the second page - this adds to the tension. I have continued to play this since grade 5, because it is such a nice piece. Something that really helps is to memorise the more difficult phrase or phrases. Once you are not relying on the note on the page, you don't feel under such pressure. I wouldn't recommend going without the music in the exam, but if you have the phrase 'by heart', it is so much easier. Good luck.
