Grade 6
QUOTE
Is it just me, or are some of the piano pieces for exams absolutely rubbish compared with other instruments?!
i think this is true because i play violin as well and the pieces have always been much better

I've just started my Grade 6 (grade 5 with 134/150 in June). I started in the winter of Year 7, so I've been learning the piano for 3.5 years. Is that good?
Also, I'm planning on taking the Grade 6 exam either this coming November or the Easter session... at the pace I'm going, around what grade do you think I can get to before I leave school? (Leave school, I mean at 18, after upper sixth.)
Strange, I've been learning almost exactly the same period of time and got exactly 134 in my grade 5 as well!!

Hey, that's cool!

When are you taking your Grade 6? Which pieces are you doing?
I don't think the piano pieces are that bad, although the Grade 6 pieces don't seem too good this year... usually, there's at least one per group that catches my eye (or ear), but with Grade 6 none of them did.

i don't know whether anyone else will agree but i've found that for higher grades the piano pieces are so much nicer...you can actually ENJOY playing them for once! In my grade 1 and 3 they were rubbish! (well I didnt like them anyway...but each to his own taste!)

I'm currently learning Fur Elise at home and it seems much better than the other pieces I've learnt such as the Kabalevsky Waltz. And all these pieces that everyone talks about sound quite interesting. And also I've seen other people play high-level pieces at concerts and festivals.

Grade 4 so they say. The tricky bits are in the middle, the main theme is a lot easier.
*However*, it's not how hard the piece is, it's how well you play it!

Cheers StuMac. The reason I'm learning it is because I've got it on my keyboard and it is one of my favourite pieces.

Jul 14 2005, 03:29 PM
Yeah, it's a lovely piece. A classic too. I think it's around Grade 4-5, but I learnt the piece when I was only at Grade 3. I put in a lot of effort, so the grade didn't really matter. Up to a certain level, you can play any piece if you put in the practice.

I might start learning Prelude in C (another piece on my keyboard) after I have finished with Fur Elise, and I presume that is around the same grade, is it?

My teacher said one of her pupils results came on Sat 23rd July after taking it 4th or 6th |July.
How much longer must I wait ?????

Well, it's not as if I'm new to music, I already play clarinet/sax.
Plus, when I was growing up I had a keyboard which I could play around on, even if it was slightly awful. I found it the other day; 3 octaves and I have a handspan of over 2 octaves on it!
Recently I've been buying soem piano music to work on, and it's been quite successful, so I'm just going to see where I can go with the Grade 6 book.
And if I fail miserabley, it's just £5.95 lost and experience gained!

What grades are Chopin's Mazurka (Op. 67, No. 2), Chopin's Nocturne (Op. 37, No. 1), Chopin's Waltz (Op. 69, No. 2), and Rachmaninoff's Concerto No. 2?

It's not possible to tell what grade you are from what pieces you play the hard part is how well you play the pieces and the other sections (sightreading, aural and scales). With Rachmaninoff's Concerto Number 2 you could be the winner of the Leeds piano competition; or a grade 2 pianist in way above your depth! How long you've been playing and how good you are at the other things would give a better indication....

Sorry, it's really not possible without hearing you actually play these things: how well is very well? All scales and arpeggios: does that mean all major and minor hands together or every combination including both hands together each one doing thirds? and how well is do? I'd guess from what you've said you'd be at the top end of the grade scale possibly even 8 (of course you wouldn't actually have grade 8 unless you've done the exam but could be around that standard without taking it) but really without hearing how well you can play it's not possible to say; that's what the exams are for! What matters really anyway is how well you can play, not what grade you have: are you from a country in which it's not usual to do exams?
If you really want to know you could take a look at
the syllabus and have a guess, but that only tells you what you have to do; not how well you have to do it!

Maybe because you started early? When did you start? I started when I was 8.

I'm about grade 3 AMEB (not sure how that translates to ABRSM, grade 4 or 5 I think?), but I've worked through the grades 1-3 ABRSM exam books as well.
I'm doing piano for my degree, but I'm not expected to be at grade 3 AMEB until november next year. *proud*

I'll have finished my 2-year unit in by the end of August at the latest.
