Is it possible to lose your singing voice?

It can probably mostly occur when you have a sore throat or a bad cough. I have to sing in one of my aural tests, but I haven't had any major problems so far.

Did you mean losing it temporarily or permanently?

my singing teacher nearly lost it when she was young...because of bad singing technique...

I lost my voice on the day before I auditioned for International Honor Choir! It happened because of a really bad cold. I always seem to get colds during really important events (maybe it's nerves?) because I got sick when I had to do my one and only judged solo voice performance, and my voice was completely gone. The judge was lenient, though, thank GOODNESS!
I've heard getting tonsils removed also could cause a loss of singing voice...

I heard that a singing coach ruined their pupil's voice completely because he gave her the wrong exercises to sing, and she ended up straining her voice so much that she couldn't even talk normally after that. *shivers*

Recently I lost mine for about 3 months. People can lose their voices permanently though, think of Julie Andrews.

What do you mean by wrong exersizes? Were they too high or too difficult of something?

I recently got a vocal nodule. I did a play at school and we didn't have mikes, so I busted my voice from acting my little heart out. It has not gone permanently (thank god!) but I've been told I'm not allowed to sing for 6 months. Grrr

My best friend's mum sang right after she had her tonsils out (as a teenager) and lost her high register for ever! She used to be a high soprano and is a rather low alto now!

I'm always really afraid of losing my singing voice, which is why I stop singing the moment I feel a cough coming on!
