Full Version: What Grade...?

I wonder if anybody can help with a query of mine? What level or grade should you be at for doing double stops? or for beginning to start them?

With double stops I mean open A and E strings, on A string B, C (sharp I think, the hash key) and open E. That is what I'm doing at the moment (as well as working on other things too!), but because the book I'm working through is an old book, I'm not sure at times what grade the pieces and etudes would be classed as now, if there would be a difference at all.

I've got the exams pieces grade 1-3 and they only begin to start double stopping a bit at 3, would this therefore be when double stopping should be at a decent level?

It is like everything with playing a violin. You can try these things out even if you're not really quite ready and get something out of it. But double stopped scales don't start until grade 6 (maj. sixths) then Maj. octaves in grade 7 etc etc.

Great way of getting your ears working well.

Try some Kreisler pieces to practice lots of double stopping.
