hehe ok im not really a singer, but i thought that this was the best place to come for advice!
i have never had singing lessons, and ive never learnt to breathe properly for singing, which might be part of my problem...which is that i have trashed my voice!
in january i had glandular fever, which started with a cold, so to kick-start my illness i went to a choir rehersal with a sore throat and proceeded to attempt the whole hour of singing, which probably wasnt really a great idea...
..then i was too tired to sing again, so once i had trashed my voice pretty well by this point i didnt have the energy to sing and get it a bit better again! hehe and then gcse's have meant i either dont have time or im not in the mood to sing, and my voice just seems pretty awful now! (ive also continued to sing my way through colds...)
and my voice always seems to sound very nasal in the lower ranges when i hear any recordings - even though it doesnt in my head... huh.gif
so anyway i was just asking if anyone had any advice now i have time to sing again! what are the basic breathing exercises for singing? thanks!

First, for recovering the voice, see my post at http://forums.abrsm.org/index.php?act=ST&f=17&t=7628# and then for breathing exercises:

Practise breathing just into your stomach,

Practise breathing just into your top half,

Breathe into both then hold your stomach firm, then pressure the air out (somewhat) through lips held as if blowing a trumpet ( but without any trumpet noises!) to give something for the stomach to push against.

...or lie on the floor and put a bit book on your stomach and try to breathe into your stomach.

Sing with your stomach held.

[All this is an approximate generalization - to do well, get a few good singing lessons]

HI

I would forget about thinking too much about breathing techniques, I would definately get a singing teacher as it is the way you are singing that is probably wrong( I am not saying you cant sing just that some of your techniques are probably wrong)

As for when you said it sounds ok in your head, did you know that your voice doesnt sound like like it does in your head to you as it would to me listening,

You will come on loads if you learn to sing propaly

Good Luck
