Full Version: Advice On Taking Up The Cello

After playing the violin for around 2 years, I've recently discovered that I prefer the Cello. I do not want to stop playing the violin, but would like to do both. I've spoken to my music teacher about this and he said it was an unusual combination. My violin teacher agreed and suggested the viola instead, but I'm positive... I want to play the cello. I think the sound is beautiful and see it as far more graceful. My parents are fine with me learning another instrument, but is it wise?

Yeh go for it! Add another string to your bow tongue.gif biggrin.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif (sorry) Many people are double (or even more) handed, it will be good experience for you to learn a new instrument and see another perspective musically. When I took up the cello on top of the trombone (which I'd played for years) it gave me a real kick up the backside and really opened my eyes on what really goes on in other sections of the orchestra, and you learn new musical skills, and that's gotta be good! I know lots of people who play violin and cello - it's your decision, however 'unusual' it may be wink.gif

Yeah, I really wanted to do it... but apparantly the 'technical differences' may have hindered my skills as a violinist... oh well. tongue.gif

Great idea rolleyes.gif

I have a freind who has a brother who plays cello and violin, and he great at both but i think he is slightly better at the cello and finds it more intresting to play.
I think you should GO FOR IT!!!

Best wishes on making a decision,

I didn't formally take the cello up but I borrowed one from school. It was really fun. I had been playing the violin for quite some time before that...
If you really want to play the cello, then go do it. Don't let your teachers sway your decision... what matters is what you want. smile.gif It's not an odd combination at all. blink.gif
(Though, I did eventually take up the viola too...)

its not odd at all iwanted to play the violin until i heard a cello and then a violin and decided that a violin is far too squeaky so i chose the cello instead

Schoenberg was a string quartet violinist (aside from being a composer) and he learned cello and was (in the words of his mates) able to play it in a quartet.

Point is, if you really want to and have an instrument available, give it a try.

Good luck,

Although people told me string instrumnets were difficult to play, I just ignored them and took up the viola! laugh.gif

I picked up a Cello for the first time today. I can play a C maj scale of 2 octaves already, and a few simple tunes like lightly row. tongue.gif I'm definitely happy with playing now... just need to sort out my lessons. Thanks for the advice. biggrin.gif
