I am bored with my music now, I want something new and challenging! I quite enjoyed playing the minuet by bizet... Any suggestions?
neil.clarinet
I just did the Gaubert Madrigal for grade 6 and really liked it (despite my mark for it!), and the Telemann unaccompanied Fantasias are interesting too.

What about some of Russell Stokes Jazz singles or the Bozza Aria if you like "calm, relaxing" stuff or some Faure. What sort of thing do you feel like playing?
andante_in_c
There's a book called Flute Time Pieces 2 by Ian Denley (notTime Pieces) which has some good stuff in it. It includes the Idylle Nicki is working on at the moment, which is another Romantic-style piece like the Bizet.

BTW I tried to reply to your pm, but your inbox is full. sad.gif

Idylle is lovely smile.gif But you're probably fed up of me recording and sending it to you!

i've got 'music for solo flute' by trevor wye which has a lovely selection of different pieces! like syrinx (debussy), partita in a minor(J S Bach), sonata in c minor (J S Bach) and quite a lot of telemann fantasie's!
and the 76 graded studies book 2 is also nice! they are more like solo pieces rather than exercises in this book, and go from about grade 6 to 8 ish i think so there's quite a good range of difficulty! and madrigal is also lovely!

There's a book called the Flautist's collection book 3 (I think...I recall telling july about it) that has the guabert and the godard in it, plus a bunch of other pieces around grade 5-7. I like it a lot!
Helen
Ooooh Morceau de Concours. I was going to buy that ages ago, but didn't. biggrin.gif laugh.gif

Ooooh, like what? (tempted, tempted)

I think it sounds like there is a fair mix of grades even if they loosely go "in order"

Both book 2 and book 3 are both available from justflutes.com

Edmund-Davies The Flautist's Collection Bk 2 IND 5-8 EDM020 9.50 TR6
Edmund-Davies The Flautist's Collection Bk 3 IND 7-9 EDM030 9.50
Sumbler Flautist's Collection Bk 4 IND 3-8 SUM010 9.50 TRCC
Sumbler Flautist's Collection Bk 5 IND 5-8 SUM020 9.50 TR6

I don't know if the Sumbler ones are part of the same series.
I'm intrigued that book 3 is listed as grade 7-9 (as far as I understand it, their system is 1-8 are normal UK grades, 9 is diploma plus) as that Faure is grade 5, and the Gaubert and Caplet in it are both grade 6, and I really don't think anything in it is beyond grade 8... unsure.gif I'm assuming of course that it's the same book, as I bought mine about 8 years ago (I don't recall where I got it from, probably topwind or justflutes)

I'd love to know what's in book 2, I'll list what is in book three sometime, but I need an early night tonight!
nicki_flute
Oooh which Caplet is in that book? My teacher was talking about a book with lots of pieces mmy level including Caplet, so I'll try and find the name of it.
sarah-flute
The reverie - I blieve there's a sister piece to it (a waltz??) that is grade 7 ish...
nicki_flute
Yes, there is. My teacher recorded a tape for me of piecves my standard and there was the Reverie and the Waltz

Petite Valse - Caplet -grade 7 B list
sarah-flute
The Reverie is very cool smile.gif though the piano part is v hard according to my teacher - and she can manage the Gaubert which is v v tricky (ie looks totally impossible to me!!! triplets against duplets all the time and some v hard ensemble stuff) so she must really mean it! I haven't heard/seen the Waltz at all though.

Heard it on the cd but resisted the temptation to buy it laugh.gif - think I should concentrate on playing well some of the pieces I already have biggrin.gif
sarah-flute
lol, yup, know the feeling.

REALLY want to get hold of my teacher!

Still awaiting your result? How was the exam?

Are you sure? One of my students has that book and she played The Little Shepherd for her AS performance. I don't remember a low B - are you sure it's not a B#?

I have been reading these threads about flute compilation books with interest.
Does anybody know whether these are arrangements of pieces or whether they are reproduced like the original piece? For example Gluck's Dance of the Blessed Spirts is on the grade 5 list. Is the compilation book piece the same as the edition mentioned on the AB syllabus or perhaps an easier version? If the pieces in these books are like the originals then they seeem to be a good buy! I looked at that website (thanks for that link) and they about £9 a book.biggrin.gif

In the ones I have used, the flute parts are the same as the originals. I think the piano parts are too where they are an original rather than an arrangement (eg the Gaubert Madrigal, which I've used from one of these). Where the piano part is a realisation of a figured bass, as in the Telemann C major, the arranger has taken certain liberties with the bass line which I dislike. I haven't looked at the version of Dance of the BS, so can't comment on that specifically.

Thanks.
When I have time I hope to get into Forsyth's (Manchester) where they keep a large stock of sheet music and can hopefully check out some of these books then. smile.gif smile.gif

Yes, I've played it death for auditions and performances. laugh.gif
sarah-flute
Ugh. I don't like that piece. I think it's probably just because it's overplayed and I have played it too much too - I've played it with two different teachers, I've played the orchestral parts when we did it as a chamber item at school, and I've played it on my own!
