I recently was in a german lesson @ school, when in a listening exercise, the person on the tape said, "in my free time I like to listen to music. My favourite style is pop, but I like listening to classical music also" When our teacher provided the translation, the class burst out laughing:"get a life, classical music - boring etc."

What are your views? Personally, I like classical music. It's so emotional and free to interpret in whatever way suits you. I just get the feeling like it's not appreciated as much as it should be by young people. Maybe that's a good thing. Comments welcome...

hiya!

yeah I know what you mean. pure classical music is dying away, but it is coming back in. people say that they don't like classical, but they say they like myleene klass, black eyed peas etc. however i don't think they realise that some of there music incorperates same classical music aswell.

i agree with you on classical music, it is very relaxing and interesting, and probably like you, i like to listen to a wide variety of music. but thats just because we appreciate the music in a different way because we are musicians.

musicians are alot more fun anyway, so those non musicians don't know what they are missing out on. ha! tongue.gif

do you agree?

Basically, (even though it's sometimes easier saying this) it would be better just to ignore peoples negative comments on classical music.......everybody has their own tastes. I have been a passionate lover of classical music all my life. I have (personally) never got any pleasure at all from half of the stuff people listen to today. One thing to remember is that classical music was made to be listened to forever..........most of todays music is forgotten in a matter of weeks!! Classical music to my mind is "True" music and is composed by a craftsman. I am 24 and I took beatings and a lot of bullying in the name of my musical preferences, but at the end of the day.............those who criticise classical music are just to ignorant to try and understand its gifts!!

My advice?? Listen to it to your hearts content...............it's done me a lot of good!! :-)

The most respectable way of understanding this is that it's just a personal taste.

Realistically, most of them made such comments out of pure ignorance; and many just follow the crowd to make such comment.

Seriously, just ask them to define what is "Pop music" and "Classical music". Many people have the thought that "Classical music" are those arranged and played by orchestral instruments in slow tempo, no dynamics, lack of pumping bass, missing crecking treble... blah blah blah... and in fact that's far from correct.

"Music" is not just a word. Music has a long history of development, and each definable period is so related with others. Say... Baroques music can be EASILY rearranged to become "Pop" Jazz music.

In fact, I would be very astonished if any one can write/arrange a regardable piece of music without studying (or listening if the person is so gifted) extensive "Classical music". (And I have seen NONE!)

I think they are "brain washed" by the "Pop music" industry - because making "Pop music" is so "low cost and high return"! Think about that, virtually "anyone" with proper voice, imaging, advertising, some sense of rhythm... can packaged as a pop star. But how much it takes to become a concert instrumentalist??

Tannie

Hi pianoforte,

I too love classical music. rolleyes.gif

What I listen to is quite varied i.e Travis, Cold Play, Pulp or even George Michael to name just a few.

I like to listen to classical music just as much as the above but I love to play it even more ! smile.gif

I play piano. Stuff like Beethoven, Chopin, Bach etc. I've even picked up my violin again after a verrrry long break ! I really enjoy it.

My friend has the Cold Play and Travis songbook for piano but it isn't really something I can really take to. dry.gif

The pieces don't sound right without actually singing along whilst playing. Something I'm not that good at. Maybe I'll try again sometime !

I think the thing with classical music is that people think you are a bit snotty/snobbish if you listen or play it.

I regularly visit the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to watch various orchestras and when I told one particular friend I was going, she said 'Oooo, we won't be able to speak to you in a while'

What that all about ? Like I'm a snob or upper class or something ! I don't think so. I'm quite the opposite! laugh.gif

I definatley think there is some kind of label attached to classical music if you know what I mean.

All thats a differnt thing to what you origionally asked isn't it ? Sorry ! sad.gif

Anyway, didn't mean to ramble !

It would be interesting to know if other people think the same thing.

when this one comes up, I tend to cite Led Zeplin, they were all classically trained musicians, as are many other big pop rock etc acts.

You do have to be carefull though, some people haven't heard of Led Zeplin (odd, very odd tongue.gif ) or lese cosider them so old they're not worth bothering about (even odder!)

Thanks for all comments:D
The previous post, about labels associated with classical music:
Well, how many "young" (implying teenagers) people starring in TV programs are seen listening to Beethoven or Mozart? you'd be hard pushed to find a role model that promotes classical music. (sorry if there is one, plz post) sad.gif
PS Fiona:
I have a coldplay song book, it's really good for sight-reading (non-conventional I know) because of all the juicy chords and guitar rhythms. I sometimes play along to the CD. I find that listening to all kinds of music definitely improved my song-writing/composition etc. At school we have to compose pieces in all sorts of styles, so this varied taste helps.

I couldn't agree more. I allways had the same situation in my school where everyone just thought classical music is boring. How would they know if they haven't heard it. I'm 20 and I have a huge taste in jazz, musicals, classical, choral, instrumental and pop. I have taken music very seriously through all my life, and in the end it will all be worth it. I am sure you are all very lucky and blessed to have such a unique gift that is creative, passionate and creditable for so many people to hear you play around the world.

In fact if there was no clear understanding of classical music of how it worked and why, then how would we understand it today and have such rembered music composers, artists and performers such as Vladmir Ashkenazy, John Lill, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Micheal Jackson, Kylie Minouge, The Beatles, J.S. Bach, L.V. Beethoven, F. Chopin, W.A. Mozart, S.I. Rachmaninoff, C.A. Debussy, Andrew Lloyd Webber........ and so on, and so on.

But you will be surprised that as you will become older and more experinced your friends will begin to like listening to something relaxing on Classic FM. Besides, every musical performer and international act such as Busted, Robbie Williams, Beyonce, Coldplay, Britney Spears, Michelle McManus etc. etc. won't be around forever they will want to do different things in life, either as something else in the same business, or acting, or family life.

So don't lose all your hopes in this, everyone likes different things, and you can't force them to like it. You could always ask them to hear you play when you practising for a recital/concert/grade exam. You might be a bit surprised!

P.S. If any of you are having exams - best of luck for you
and if any of you are waiting for results - you will get what you will truly deserve

I know what you mean with the label for 'boring, no life' etc being attached to classical music, but there are labels attached to you whatever music yopu listen to because we live in a society where you are judged by the music you listen to, for example anyone who listens to rock or punk is a freak in the eyes of some people in my year, people who listen to classical are boring, pop listeners are sad etc. Personally, i think we should be respected for the type of music we listen to, not labelled. Anyway, if you do listen to classical music, raise your chin, after all, it is said classical music can raise you intelligence.

Dont worry. I have a lot of people thinking that but be proud of yourself because classical music (not opera sorry people if you like it!) can be really relaxing. I get stick from people because I listen to rock and yes it is quite a drastic change!

classical music is NOT boring.

when my friends learn that i actually listen to classical music, they crack up. sure, i'm a pop and rock lover as much as the next person, but come on, one style of music isn't everything.

they say that classical is old and outdated. what they don't realize is what they're missing out on.

i actually prefer to listen to classical music

I like both.

In my CD collection i have Mozart, Pavoroti, the Darkness and No Doubt.

When i play my bassoon and flute I like to play both. I use the guest spot books to play along to-for some fun. But, i like to play classical music because it is more of a challenge.

Yet, when you mention classical to some people in my class they laugh and take the mick. (most of those people want to take GCSE music!)

The youth of today have not gone completely bonkers, some of us do have the ability and concentration span to listen to classical music!
I am a brilliant example of someone who has converted to classical music, only because

1. i had to do a level music, i was a complete Philistine before, now i'm working towards grade 8 piano,
something i thought i would never ever be able to do!
2. A very good role model who preaches about classical music is Alicia Keys! Get both her albums, it
makes you want to learn the piano even more, and learn more about her own influences!!

So cut us some slack! blink.gif blink.gif
