...people you are teaching ignore your advice on what they're doing wrong? (This is not about music teaching, something else).

They're taught a way of doing something, but say I see them turning the wrong way (e.g. clockwise instead of anticlockwise) and I just say "that turn should be anticlockwise not clockwise", and they ignore what I say. But then the teacher tells them EXACTLY THE SAME THING and its "ohhhhhhhh we get it now".

Ever faced this?? What am I supposed to do? Leave them doing it wrong?

I feel its because a majority of them have children older than me. unsure.gif

People will only change a pattern of behaviour when they see a reason for changing and are motivated to make the change. I have resolved not to get too stressed banging my head against a brick wall when my flute students will not make THE SIMPLE CHANGES THAT WOULD MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE TO THEIR PLAYING. I WILL NOT GET STRESSED... I WILL NOT GET STRESSED mad.gif mad.gif

Often, when trying to teach the new cadets drill. So frustrating! First you have to have to earn your respect. One of the quotes I like is this:

'Expect discipline, earn respect'

because it's true, and if you treat it like this, things will get better.

And yes, it is frustrating. An officer starts teaching them drill, and guess what, hoorah, they can do it...

I sometimes wonder if it's just because I'm the same rank as them and therefore they don't have to do what I say....WRONG! I am more senior, should have more respect but I don't ....AAAnyway...

Oh yes....

Only the other day. Lesson before a grade 3 violin exam and the worst bow control I ever saw. Trying not to panic I go over some easy pieces with the same technique to no avail until little Jonny says "Oh I figured this out myself now, I need to put the bow down, stop, then play the note"

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGG

I just spent 20 minutes telling you that!

it's sometimes communication - while I may ignore what someone's telling me until I hear it from someone else who I may respect more or who isn't always trying to tell me what to do, othertimes someone may be telling me something and I just don't get what they're saying... e.g. old piano teacher claims she told me certain things but that wasn't what I understood her to mean. new piano teacher tells me something and because of the way she says it I get it at once, do it and playing sounds a whole lot better!

Sometimes you can say the same thing over and over again and it's not that we're ignoring you, it's just it hasn't sunk into our brains yet! Like at trampolining someone will say "you've got to go up then twist" and I'll spend ages doing it wrong, and then it'll click. I'm not doing it on purpose, I just haven't quite grasped it yet!

I spent ages telling someone I was teaching clarinet too saying "if you put you're little finger under the keys all the time, it's too dificult to reach it when you need to" and "you can't put your thumb below the back hole when you're playing G, A and Bb because you end up holding it wrong, and not being able to move as quickly"

She ignored me for ages, then went to the clarinet teacher at school when she needed to do a lot for GCSE and the teacher spent ages trying to work out what it was she was doing that was making it more difficult. He didn't realise quick enough, so I told him what the problem was, he told her and she changed instantly!

arghhh!
