Sorry I dont know how to spell it but anyway next academic year I am thinking of taking up saxophone but I was just wondering by doing this would it ruin my flute embouchre. I dont think it will because people like sax lover play flute and sax but just wanted to hear peoples thoughts! rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif

I have always felt that reed instruments do more harm to flute embouchoure than the other way round. Yes people like me, saxlover, elmo and a few others mix them. If I was principlally flute then I would be more wary of playing clarinet or sax. There is no harm trying, but you have to use your own judgement, like I found I can play clarinet and flute but not clarinet and bassoon.

There have been similar threads on this. I'll look for them.

Depends how seriously you take your flute playing. It will affect it to some extent, but the effects will be manageable if you play the flute before the sax whenever you practise. I wouldn't recommend it if you're thinking of studying the flute to post-Grade 8 level.

I agree with andante- if you want to take your flute playing to a very high standard..then don't do it

My first study is saxophone and play flute just for fun really...but I'm not very good at flute. At first I found it hard to play clarinet/sax and then go straight to flute, now I can do it but tone gets even worse than it already is!

I used to find it no problem doing flute to clarinet, but found it impossible to play clarinet to flute. It was because I played with my top lip over my teeth with clarinet, instead of playing teeth on top. But now I play with teeth on top of the mouthpiece, and it's not half as difficult doing clarinet to flute.

It might take a while getting used to, but I really would avoid playing sax on a day where you'd have to play flute properly too.

Have fun smile.gif

Ok thanks I was just wondering cos I went to see 42nd Street the other day ( it was fab) and several of the musicians had a sax, flute and clarinet.

I think it's more common in jazz to swap between them, but most will be principally sax or clarinet.

Here's the other thread

Thanks all. I also know a guy who is in this band called the Ckooler Kings and even though they play classic rock he plays his sax and his flute in both the songs one after the other. He must have some good experience. laugh.gif

It's not that you can't do it, coz I've had to before. It's just it feels a bit weird! And you can't always gurantee as nice a tone with the flute afterwards dry.gif

Yes I don't like playing both at the same concert. I did once and I was sure I compromised both. I try to avoid that.
