Well I got a few top Es in a gig on Saturday, and that's normally as high as I can reliably go on a B flat.
On a pic I can hit Fs on a good day!
Anyone got tips on how to improve the top register?

On my trombone in treble clef i can play G major over 3 octaves. However the standard range is usually C major over 2 octaves. I believe that applies to most brass instruments, it would be unlikely to find graded exams that go much beyond this, however i you play in a jazz big band i've seen trumpet parts written well beyond this. It's as if they think they are writing for Atturo Sandoval!

Hello,
I recently got a new trumpet teacher who happens to be a tuba player but can also get top Cs on a trumpet easily. This sounds impossible for a tuba player but his method really works as my range has improved heaps since starting my lessons with him. He says that the lower and louder that you can buzz on the mouthpiece the higher you can play. If you can also buzz higher and louder using tounging then your register will improve. He also says that breathing is very important and even if you dont have very high to play then you still have to take maximum air in.
It honestly really works as i can get top C's easily and go higher than that still when i warm up for a long time by buzzing.
Hope this Helps!

Well this could be a number of reasons. I suggest you chat to your teacher and look for ways to improve your range. Also could i suggest you start to work through legatto harmonics chromatically starting at low F# up to C, initially aim for 4/5 harmonics then build it to 6/7 or even 8 when you have the strength. Eventually you'll be in the Atturo Sandoval range!

yea thats the same as me. my tutor has tried to build up my range but im not really getting too far. i got a top B today though i was very proud of myself. i think its just a matter of having lots of determination and lots and lots of practice!

Sheilz!
Do you know how easy it is to play high notes on the tuba? I´m a tuba player(been playing it for two years now), and my top note ever, on a Eb bass tuba are Eb2, thats one octav and a minor 3rd above middle C(that´s also one octav above standards for Eb tuba) And on a Bb bass, I´ve manged to play C2, one octav above middle C(and also a ninth above standards for Bb tuba)
I recently started playing the trumpet(about three months ago), and after three days, I manged the high C! My top note ever on the trumpet are the G above the high C.
So,
don´t underestimate the power of the tuba player!

Nothing to be sorry about Sheilz!
If you want to hear my opinion on the matter, I would say that it´s actually EASIER, but as most tuba players just pratice to play thier boring bass parts, they never try to build up thier higher register, and thus, everyone thinks that "the tuba are just for low notes only", which, in turn, aren´t true.
I´m currently writing a tuba concerto, and currently I´m writing the Cadenzas, and Ãt goes so high that it could be a "low/medium register trumpet concerto" really, as it goes as high as the C one octav above the trumpets middle C(sounding concert Bb above middle C).
But I like it when it goes high
Preferly too high

hey, there's lots of trombone, trumpet and tuba talk, but where are the horns?!?!?
typical register for a grade 8 plus horn player is four octaves, C below bass clef (2 ledger lines) to C above treble clef (2 ledger lines).
I think on a really good day i hit a top Eb! but i may have just imagined it..............

On trombone treble clef, I can get comfortably from Pedal C - A above the stave, although I have before got Pedal A/Ab and top E above the stave. I can most of the time get Bb above the stave and C too, but they are quite iffy lol
