What do people recommend?

I like Hessian Dance as the study..but unsure on the other pieces. I have the Gershwin in List B....was thinking of getting Time Pieces 2 as that has a List A and B piece in it

I prefer the Music through Time ones to the Time Pieces ones. The Ravel Prelude is a fantastic piece of music, but a bit too tricky for Grade 2 unless you are really good at sustaining long legato lines. The Lass of Richmond Hill has some tricky corners too. In Music through Time 'Go to the Devil' is a lively country dance tune with an easy-peasy accompaniment, and 'If you go in ...' is a good piece of G&S.

The all-time favourite from List B has to be 'Bertie's Blues' from 'All Jazzed up', and you can do 'No Dice', another popular one from the same book for Grade 3.

Thanks, I'm just trying to limit the amount of books I need to get!

I've got All Jazzed Up. Fab. I also remember a book with a piece called Flute Air, not sure what grade it is if it's on any. Lovely piece though.

I did both of those laugh.gif. I like the Lass of Richmond Hill, I did it for my Grade 2.

Yes Richmond Hill one is good from Time Pieces but I agree that the Ravel is pretty tricky to pull off for a Grade 2 player - one pupil is doing this friday in exam but unfortunately i dont think it was the greatest choice in the world - but it was a case of having to limit the number of books bought. Its a shame you cant get collections like for the piano grades - but i think ive ranted about that before!!
I like the 50 for flute book for the List C studies. Brilliant book.

I wonder if the AB have a take on this. Here's another thread on exam books.

Although it would help people on a budget I do feel that we'd end up with a more restricted choice.

At the moment, each list contains between 7 and 10 pieces, compared with the piano syllabus which has only 6 (at Grades 1-7).

I know a number of teachers restrict the pieces on offer - I keep coming across flautists who have been told to get Time Pieces 3 and then have to play the Mussorgsky and the Prokofiev for Grade 4 and the Mozart Allegro and the Berkeley for Grade 5 - but I appreciate the freedom of allowing students as full a choice as possible. If 9 of the pieces were in one book, parents would expect to pay for that book and be reluctant to buy any others.

the pieces i did are
A:the lass of richmond hill
B:if you go in you are sure to win
C:lop-sided flute
