Just read the BBC report and it says:

"Scott Carson saved two penalties to end Chesterfield's Carling Cup dream and take Charlton into the quarter-finals for the first time in their history."

Is that really true? blink.gif unsure.gif

Yep.

Charlton haven't ever got anywhere near winning the league cup, and have only won the FA Cup once. And that was in 1947........

[in order of importance:] Yep, the FA Cup involves teams from the lower leagues of English football (e.g. Newcastle Benfield Bay Plastics and Hungerford Town) and the top teams as well, such as Charlton and Reading. The League Cup involves all 92 teams between Manchester United and Macclesfield Town in the Football League, while the Johnstone's Paint Trophy only involves those clubs in Leagues 1 and 2. There are other trophies in English football; the FA Trophy involves those from the Conference and below, and the FA Vase involves those teams below the Conference North and South leagues I think.

If you go to the first page of this thread, you'll find some forumites who agree with your viewpoint on football Ben.

Needless to say, I like watching football (though this season hasn't exactly been stunning so far! laugh.gif )

I feel Clevedon Town, Barrow and Newport County will do well tomorrow in the FA Cup.

And Lewes as well... hope they win; my grandparents only live down the road from the Dripping Pan ground, where a new stand will be unveiled! biggrin.gif

Well done to bottom-of-the-Conference-South side Basingstoke for beating Carling Cup giant killers Chesterfield, and Rushden & Diamonds who beat Yeovil.
Unlucky for Kettering Town, Leatherhead, Barrow and Gainsborough Trinity, who narrowly lost aganist League opposition.
And Gillinghan were lucky enough to avoid repeating last year's shock defeat by Burscough.

Charlton's rather short run has ended...rolleyes.gif

Charlton go to Reading next Saturday.

Hope you enjoy all the goals your team is likely to score next Saturday CE.

Against Wigan, our defence had gaps so large you could drive a bus through them. sad.gif

FA Cup 2nd Round Draw
  1. Farsley/Milton Keynes v Blackpool
  2. Cheltenham/Scunthorpe v Wrexham
  3. Brighton v Stafford/Maidenhead
  4. Bristol City v Gillingham
  5. Shrewsbury/Hereford v Port Vale
  6. Macclesfield/Walsall v Rochdale/Hartlepool
  7. Stockport v Wycombe
  8. Weymouth/Bury v Chester
  9. Barnet v Northampton/Grimsby
  10. Tranmere v Peterborough
  11. King's Lynn v Oldham
  12. Darlington v Swansea
  13. Salisbury City v Nottingham Forest
  14. Torquay v Leyton Orient
  15. Bristol Rovers v Bournemouth
  16. Bradford v Havant & W/Millwall
  17. Swindon v Morecambe
  18. Mansfield v Doncaster
  19. Chelmsford/Aldershot v Basingstoke Town
  20. Rushden & Diamonds v Tamworth
Am glad the last 2 ended up being all-Non-League clashes. Really good chance for Tamworth to reach the 3rd round for the second season in a row!

Salisbury v Forest sounds like it will be a good game, and so does King's Lynn v Oldham.

Leyton Orient have got another League 2 struggler from last season. Should be winnable.

Brighton might end up having a good run in the FA Cup - they could repeat the same score against Northwich when they play Stafford/Maidenhead, and that would give them a bit of confidence if they get drawn against Chelsea or Manchester United in the next round.

Up the Linnets! biggrin.gif (Signor Dante-in-c is from King's Lynn).

There's a nice North-East Hampshire derby brewing if Aldershot get past Chelmsford.

Charlton are not known for ditching managers after such a short time, but to be honest, this news doesn't surprise me. Sad to say, Dowie appeared to be out of his depth, and Charlton are, at the moment, a club heading the wrong way fast. sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif

Oxford United's unbeaten record in the Conference has ended, after losing 1-0 away at Gravesend, and Dagenham are now only 2 points behind! ohmy.gif

Preston NE are now level on points with Cardiff after beating Leicester 1-0, while the other Preston (Athletic) shocked Stenhousemuir by beating them 2-0 in the Scottish Cup. And Deveronvale (from the Highland League) beat Montrose 3-2 with their first goal being in the 87th minute!

And Leyton Orient are off the bottom of League 1 after drawing 0-0 with Yeovil and Cheltenham lost 1-0 at Chesterfield biggrin.gif.
