Does anyone have any suggestions for pieces on the grade 5 syllabus!
neil.clarinet
From list A I like the Brahms and Schumann. They are good pieces to have as their other movements are more advanced and also excellent for future grades. Similarly Arnold in list B. I don't know the others that well.

Mendelssohn in list A is good- I did that, also Fast zu keck is a fun piece

If you're looking for an easy list B piece then you must do 'Summer' by Paul Reade -easy and fab to play!

List C- i like Bolero
jo.clarinet
I don't know all of them either, but I think most on List A are good pieces. I'd recommend the Gade, Reger and Lefevre.

From List B the Lutoslawski is worth getting, and Paul Reade's 'Victorian Kitchen Garden'.

In List C, I liked the Richard Benger 'Bolero', and the James Rae 40 Modern Studies is a really good book! I don't think I know any of the other studies.

Why don't you go to your local music shop and have a browse? We've all got different tastes, so we can't really advise you....
Deborah
They're all good pieces! Have a word with your teacher, maybe they can lend you some of the music to play through, to see which ones you like best. Also, they will probably have an opinion or two on which pieces will best show off your strongest points (and/or hide your weakest ones tongue.gif).

If I was doing Grade 5 now, I'd probably do Mozart and Lutoslawski. Or Brahms and Reade. Or...

What Mozart is on grade 5 syllabus?

Edit- apologies, I know rolleyes.gif

saxlover

I agree. The whole set is interesting to work on, and varied. You need a seriously alert accompanist for the ones where the two players have different time signatures!
elmo
Which Lutoslawski is for G5?

I played the first one at a concert and my teacher said "If we go wrong I can work out where you are in only one place, so if it sounds a bit wierd keep playing and I'll find you there. If it's after that point that it goes wrong, keep playing and I'll play a chord at the end"

Yessssss very reassuring! laugh.gif

i think the lutowalski is a dance prelude or sommin ... i have it somewhere.
i dont really like it
saxlover
It's Dance Prelude 4 I think for grade 5

*Goes to look at score*

I think I've played that, it's got writing in the accompaniment part so I must've done! blink.gif It would've been in year 10 if I did.

I like number 1 and 5 mostly...I despise the 3rd!
elmo
Yeah 3rd doesn't do much for me either. Number one's ok as long as everything goes right! God I remember thinking "that high F at the end is a bit touch and go!" and I played it this morning and the F at the end was about the only thing which was right!
saxlover
I remember when Sally first gave me that piece ,and I looked at it and laughed. The first time I got that F out I nearly cried with surprise and shock!!!
elmo
lol Fs aren't so bad when you have to play F#s and god forbid, Gs!!

H.O.M gave me a symphony or something written by Lutovslawski (coz he thought I might be interested) and it said at the top "performers play at their own speed, but finish each section when the signal is given. They are allowed to improvise both tempo and notation in some sections" It was really weird!! It was like school orchestra!

A friend of mine had to write a composition in the style of him. Rather her than me!

saxlover
Composition in the style of him would be easy!!

Put in random high notes, stupid time sigs that don't match accomp and random grace notes on ridicloult high notes!! HAHA!!!
elmo
No, apparently he has the same sort of ideas in each!

She got a 2:1 though so she doesn't care!
