Full Version: First Keyboard / Digital Piano

Hi all,

I've been pondering trying to learn piano for a few years now, and yesterday had a first "lesson" from my girlfriend and absolutely loved it! I clicked with it in a way I never have in my couple of years of guitar tinkering and I really want to continue with it. I have the use of her very nice digital piano, but I really want something to practice on at home.

After a few hours on the web it looks like you can pay ~£100 for a keyboard that's like something I used to make motorbike noises on at school, or over £500 for something approaching a decent digital piano. Is this really the situation or is it possible to find something appropriate for learning basic piano skills without breaking the bank?

I guess the ideal thing for me would be something the with standard sized, pressure sensitive keys for starters. Five octaves seem to be fairly common, and I guess I don't want anything with less keys than that? Any other major things I should look out for?

Thanks for any help!

A recent thread came up about this.

If you search on clavinova or digital piano you should find others.

I have a Yamaha PSR 282 I'm learning on, but then I've never played a real piano so I can't compare.

best answer would be to take your girlfriend and visit a good local musical instrument shop. You'll get the chance to try lots of different options and your girlfriend can tell you which 'feel' and 'respond' like a real piano.
